Awards season officially drew to a close with the 2020 Oscars on Sunday. The biggest ceremony of the year, now in its 92nd year, saw a high dose of Hollywood glamour with many nominees opting to turn the red carpet green by wearing vintage gowns or at least including elements that had been recycled.

Billy Porter made a head-turning statement in Giles Deacon Couture while model Lily Aldridge was ethereal in recycled Ralph Lauren and Irish actress Catriona Balfe wore Valentino Couture for her very first Oscars (nabbing her a place on Vogue’s best dressed list, no less). Saoirse Ronan also turned heads in custom Gucci couture offset by a new fringe.

The colour palettes were of the season: Regina King, Laura Dern, Julia Butters, Idina Menzel and America Ferrera all opted for shades of pinks, fuschia and reds. Notably, Chanel dressed a number of nominees for the occasion, including Margot Robbie and Penelope Cruz – and all wore a dark black or, as in Robbie’s case, navy.

Sustainable glamour

Natalie Portman made a feminist statement in Maria Grazia Chiuri’s ethereal embroidered cape with the names of female directors overlooked by the Academy stitched into the fabric. The push for sustainability was addressed via chic pieces like Kaitlyn Dever’s crimson Louis Vuitton look or Saoirse’s –  Gucci used the same black fabric as her BAFTAs gown to create her Oscars dress. Robbie’s Chanel was a gown from the label’s spring 1994 Haute Couture collection.
