This season marks a shift towards joyful, expressive dressing but with a focus on wearability. Here, Sinead Keenan takes us through the best pieces that feel effortless, versatile and easy to integrate into everyday wardrobes.
If there’s one clear message coming out of the fashion world as we step into Spring/Summer 2026, it’s this: joyful, expressive dressing is firmly back. After several seasons dominated by pared-back minimalism and tonal basics, designers are reintroducing personality into the everyday wardrobe through texture, playful proportions, confident colour and statement accessories.
The key difference this time around is wearability. While the runways may have embraced drama, the mood for SS26 is about translating those ideas into pieces that feel effortless, versatile and genuinely useful in a real wardrobe. From sculptural dresses and elevated denim to expressive accessories and sunshine-ready neutrals, this season is about curating standout pieces that feel like you. Pieces that are elevated yet easy and endlessly adaptable.
Below are the key directions defining the season and my edit of the pieces worth investing in now.
Statement dresses: Texture, volume and drama
Spring/Summer 2026 is delivering dresses that truly carry an outfit on their own. Designers are playing with shape, volume and surface detail to create pieces that feel striking yet easy to wear. From bohemian ruffles and floral prints to voluminous full skirts, puffball hems and sculptural silhouettes. Sheer organza layers brought romance, while craft and texture were abundant, with tactile fabrics such as crochet, tassels and fringing bringing movement and personality to even the simplest look.
What makes these dresses particularly appealing is their simplicity. They require very little styling, so often a great pair of sandals and minimal jewellery are all that’s needed, making them ideal for everything from weekend lunches to summer events. The overall mood is feminine but modern, with a sense of relaxed confidence rather than overt occasionwear.

The Scarf: The season’s ultimate styling hero
One of the most versatile accessories returning to the spotlight this season is the silk scarf. Scarves are no longer reserved for classic neckwear. They’re now being styled as tops, belts, hair accessories and even layered over tailoring to introduce colour and print. If you want to make your blazer feel a little more feminine, tie a scarf around your shoulders as seen at Celine, or wrap a long pareo scarf over your trousers like at Dries Van Noten.
Silk print scarves appeared as colourful under-layers at Miu Miu and were also spotted throughout fashion-week street style, worn at the waist and tied as triangular apron-style belts.
The beauty of the scarf trend lies in its ability to elevate wardrobe staples. A simple white T-shirt, tailored trousers or relaxed denim instantly feels more considered when paired with a vibrant printed foulard. It’s a styling trick that editors and street style stars have embraced across fashion month, offering an easy way to refresh pieces you already own.

Polka Dots: Playful prints make a comeback
Among the standout prints of the season, polka dots are making a joyful return. From Khaite and Altuzarra to Dries Van Noten and Valentino, the pattern appeared across numerous collections, reimagined in everything from classic monochrome to oversized graphic iterations. Rather than feeling retro, the new wave of polka dots feels fresh, modern and surprisingly versatile.
Designers are styling them across fluid dresses, tailored separates and lightweight blouses, proving the print can work just as easily for day as it can for evening. Paired with neutral accessories or simple denim, polka dots add instant personality to an outfit without overwhelming it. It’s a print that feels optimistic and timeless, exactly the mood fashion is embracing for SS26.

Elevated Denim: The modern wardrobe essential
Denim continues its evolution this season, moving well beyond the traditional pair of jeans. Designers are reimagining the fabric in more fashion-forward silhouettes. From raw-edge mini skirts at Dior to denim dresses at Zimmermann and Gabriela Hearst. Givenchy showed a sophisticated pair of jeans with a deep turn-up cuff, while Victoria Beckham featured an oversized structured denim shirt worn as a jacket.
The appeal of these pieces lies in their versatility. They feel familiar enough to slot easily into an existing wardrobe, yet updated enough to give everyday outfits a more directional edge. Styled with silk camisoles, crisp shirting or relaxed knitwear, elevated denim offers that perfect balance of casual ease and polished style.

Soft Tailoring & Volume Play: The versatile wardrobe staple
Tailoring remains an important element of the modern wardrobe, but for SS26 the silhouette is still oversized, while the mood is noticeably softer and more relaxed. Structured suiting has given way to fluid blazers with billowy, wide-leg trousers that move with the body rather than feeling rigid. While shoulders remain wide, the blazer drapes rather than conforming to a structured fit.
Stella McCartney, Bottega Veneta and Michael Kors showcased tailoring in palettes of mauve and aubergine, while Victoria Beckham’s collarless oversized mens-style tailoring looked nonchalant yet stylishly considered.
These pieces blur the line between workwear and leisurewear, making them ideal for the hybrid lifestyles many of us now lead. A softly tailored blazer can just as easily be worn over a dress for dinner as it can with denim during the day. And a louche trouser suit can be paired back effortlessly with a T-shirt or blouson shirt, then finished with a retro trainer or elevated with a heeled pump. The focus is on comfort, proportion and subtle drama through volume rather than strict structure.

The Spring Shoe Edit: Footwear That Balances Sport and Elegance
This season’s footwear story is all about contrast. On one end of the spectrum are retro-inspired trainers in neutral palettes, the kind of effortless kicks that work with tailoring, denim or dresses alike. On the other are refined, feminine options such as delicate heeled sandals at NYC luxury brands The Row and Khaite, and the desirable two-tone pump at Chanel. Also, thanks to the return of the Chloé girl’s bohemian style at the recent AW26 show, platform clogs are making a comeback.
The result is a shoe wardrobe that balances practicality with polish. Trainers and clogs anchor everyday outfits with a relaxed edge, while elegant heels and barely-there kitten sandals provide an easy transition into evening dressing.
Accessories That Make the Outfit: The Power of the Statement Piece
Accessories are playing a starring role this season, often acting as the defining element of an outfit. Oversized sunglasses and a piece of sculptural jewellery add statement to a look, while handbags have taken the spotlight rather than simply complementing an outfit.
Fringed woven bags have emerged at Bottega and Balmain, marking a decisive shift toward tactile maximalism over quiet luxury. This season’s iteration often blends intricate artisanal weaving with dramatic long-length fringe that adds movement and texture.
The ladylike handbag has also evolved into what one fashion editor called “frazzled lady” handbags. Fendi, Chanel and Dior all featured bags that looked carried askew, tipping over or even hanging open. The key to making your accessories work is restraint. Rather than layering multiple statement pieces, it’s about focusing on one standout accessory. Perhaps a bold earring or cuff or a luxurious woven bag, and allowing it to elevate or inspire the entire look.
The New Outerwear: Light Layers with Impact
Outerwear may not be the first thing that comes to mind for spring and summer, but SS26 proves that the right lightweight layer can define an entire outfit. Designers are focusing on pieces that transition seamlessly between seasons, from oversized trenches in breathable cotton and silk blends at Celine, Gabriela Hearst and Sportmax to soft buttery leather jackets in bomber and funnel-neck styles at Balenciaga, Phoebe Philo and Isabel Marant. My favourite new-season piece is a taupe funnel-neck leather jacket by COS.
Also, utility jackets in a myriad of fabrics and shades featured prominently throughout the collections, in particular a lemon leather style at Loewe and a safari canvas jacket at Victoria Beckham. These layers add structure and polish without feeling heavy, making them ideal for unpredictable weather and cooler evenings. Whether thrown over a dress or paired with denim and tailoring, the right jacket instantly elevates even the simplest look.
Wearing SS26 in real life
Ultimately, the message of Spring/Summer 2026 is about personal style. Rather than dictating strict trends, the season encourages experimentation. Mixing sculptural shapes with relaxed pieces, pairing bold accessories with timeless staples, and introducing colour and print in ways that feel authentic.
Fashion right now is less about perfection and more about expression. The most modern wardrobes are those that balance statement pieces with everyday essentials, allowing each look to feel both considered and effortless. And perhaps that’s the real appeal of SS26, clothes that bring a little joy back into getting dressed.
