Zayn and Gigi have broken up and #WearewithZayn is already trending

According to an article that appeared in TMZ just yesterday afternoon, Gigi’s mother Yolanda Hadid alleges that her daughter’s partner, Zayn, struck her during an encounter at the couple’s house earlier this month. 

While Yolanda herself is never directly quoted in the piece, sources claim that she is “seriously considering filing a police report” about the incident which happened “at some point last week”. 

Addressing the rumours in a statement he shared to his social media last night, Zayn said that though he would prefer to deal with their family issues privately, he felt compelled to speak out in light of the story being “leaked” to the press. 

“As you all know, I am a private person,” Malik began. “I very much want to create a safe and private space for my daughter to grow up in. A place where private family matters aren’t thrown on the world stage for all to poke and pick apart. 

“In an effort to protect that space for her I agreed to not contest claims arising from an argument I had with a family member of my partner’s who entered our home while my partner was away several weeks ago. This was and still should be a private matter but it seems for now there is divisiveness and despite my efforts to restore us to a peaceful family environment that will allow for me to co-parent my daughter in a manner in which she deserves, this has been ‘leaked’ to the press. 

“I am hopeful for healing for all involved with the harsh words shared,” he continued, before later adding, “more importantly I remain vigilant to protect Khai and give her the privacy she deserves.”

Intentionally keeping it vague on the details, Zayn never mentioned Yolanda by name in his first post – that changed once the TMZ article was published though and the singer apparently reached out to the tabloid to give a statement. “I adamantly deny striking Yolanda Hadid,” he told the outlet. “For the sake of my daughter I decline to give any further details.” 

Gigi has remained noticeably tight-lipped about the whole thing with a representative for the supermodel simply saying, “Gigi is solely focused on the best for Khai. She asks for privacy during this time”. 

First sparking romance rumours back in 2015, the couple seemed to make things official when Gigi starred in Zayn’s Pillow Talk music video. Breaking up for a brief few months in 2018, both parties shared individual statements confirming the split. “Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving, and fun relationship and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and friend,” Malik wrote in his statement at the time. “She has such an incredible soul. I’m grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at this time; we wish this news could have come from us first.”

Gigi echoed Malik’s sentiments, adding that “breakup statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience over a few years … not only in the relationship but in life in general. I’m forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons that Z and I shared. I want nothing but the best for him and will continue to support him as a friend that I have immense respect and love for. As for the future, whatever’s meant to be will be.”

That breakup didn’t last long though and they got back together not long after. Now parents to 13-month Khai, it’s believed that the couple has since parted ways once again – this time supposedly as a result of the alleged altercation between Zayn and Yolanda. “They are not together right now,” a Hadid family friend told PEOPLE Magazine. “They are both good parents though. They co-parent. Yolanda is of course very protective of Gigi. She wants the best for her daughter and grandchild.”

#WearewithZayn has already started trending on Twitter in light of the news, with countless fans taking to social media to express their solidarity with the former One Direction star. The whole thing feels a little uncomfortable though. As with anything celeb-related, the media has run with one tiny thread of information, essentially spinning the story as they go. But there’s very little by way of a story here and based on Zayn’s evident desire to not have this play out in the public eye, I wonder if this is one story Zayn Malik fans should sit out?
