The Met Gala 2020 theme and hosts have been announced: here’s everything we can expect

The Met Gala 2020 theme and hosts have been announced: here’s everything we can expect

The event is one of the biggest in the fashion calendar

Stop everything you’re doing — the details of the biggest fashion moment of 2020 have been announced. That’s right folks, we finally have the theme of the Met Gala 2020.

With the Gala gaining in popularity and hype every year, 2019’s version saw some of the strongest outfits yet. The theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion, modelled after a Susan Sontag essay of the same name, and it gave celebrities the chance to really let loose and let their sartorial instincts run wild. From Kacey Musgrave’s Barbie getup to Lady Gaga’s not-one-not-two-but four outfits in 15 minutes, the fashion stakes were high and attendees were eager to reach them.

And now, as we are six months away from our next first Monday in May, the details of the 2020 celebrations have been released — and we’re very excited to see what’s in store.

The Met Gala 2020 theme is… “About Time: Fashion and Duration”

Next year’s Met Gala coincides with the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 150th anniversary, and the entire year will be dedicated to commemorative exhibitions and events to celebrate, including the Met Gala.

The exhibition, according to Vogue, will “showcase a century-and-a-half of fashion history culled from its archive and presented along a ‘disruptive’ timeline”.

Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, said the idea for the theme was inspired by 1992 Sally Potter film Orlando, which was based on the time-traveling Virginia Woolf novel of the same name — specifically, a scene with Tilda Swinton where her character runs through time.

Bolton will divide the 160 women’s pieces featured in the exhibition into two collections — the first, black looks, and the second, mostly white with bursts of colour.

In a press release, Max Hollein, director of the Met, said: “This exhibition will consider the ephemeral nature of fashion, employing flashbacks and fast-forwards to reveal how it can be both linear and cyclical.”

The exhibition will be in collaboration with Louis Vuitton, with Nicolas Ghesquière as a co-chair for the event.

And the other co-chairs? Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, and, of course, Anna Wintour.

What we’re looking forward to

With this line-up paired with the About Time theme, we’re expecting plenty of timeless beauty, and classic Hollywood style. With Emma Stone and Lin-Manuel Miranda on the calling card, Tinseltown glamour will be the name of the game.

The famous Miranda Priestly herself Meryl Streep making an appearance at a Vogue event is one we can’t wait for — here’s hoping she and Anna get plenty of snaps together.
