Four cool ways to wear military inspired jackets this season

That old reliable, the military jacket, is back in vogue, adding style kudos to classic staples and anchoring feminine florals. How will you wear yours?

While we’ve been quietly obsessing over head-to-toe brights, heritage checks and every shade of silver, the fashion pack has been leading the charge in military inspired jackets and army-esque coats. They’re a universal favourite again with stylish women as diverse as blue-blooded Olivia Palermo and quirky blogger-turned-designer Leandra Medine, with both of them embracing the look, albeit in their own individual way. The reason for this renewed popularity is simple. An army jacket goes with everything. It anchors florals, diluting any fussiness or overly feminine associations. When worn with denims, your outfit immediately becomes so much more than the sum of its parts – this kind of utilitarianism is the epitome of effortless chic. Crisp tailoring takes on a fresh modernity when juxtaposed with the rough and readiness of a khaki throw-on, while extravagant heels simply feel less try-hard with the help of an oversized earthy green overcoat.

Adding badges to an army jacket can bring individuality to your outfit, but for a fresher look, contrast feminine embellishments with military-style detailing. Great style is often grounded in clever contrasts.

A distressed army jacket is the perfect counterpoint to a pink ruffled dress. The frayed edges give this piece a vintage feel and soften the sternness of the shoulder line. Pretty dresses lose any cutesy associations when worn with a jacket that looks like it came straight from an army surplus store.

A floral motif on a khaki jacket gives the piece a contemporary edge, as it balances masculine and feminine artfully. Similarly, don’t be afraid to mix primary colours with earthy utilitarian shades. Together they look unexpected and modern.

The beauty of an army jacket is that it doesn’t have to be elaborately styled. Textured coats with distinctive buttons and additional military detailing work well with traditional blue denim, adding interest and depth to the look.
