The countdown to autumn is on and we’re thinking about what we can buy now to prepare for the transitional spell. Here are five pieces that’ll do the job perfectly.
Don’t panic. It’s not yet time to bring out the violins and mourn the end of summer. But we do need to be realistic.
We’re only weeks away from September, a month in which there’s a noticeable dip in temperature. It’s also a month of fresh starts; whether that be in life, in work or in fashion. Layers slowly start to reappear and all of a sudden the shops are filled with textures and silhouettes we forget even existed.
August is a tricky month. We’re hit with a chill in the morning but by afternoon it feels like the tropics. Items we buy now must be able to cope with this kind of randomness and also serve us well through autumn and beyond. Here are five pieces worth investing in now.
Oversized blazer
Wool blend oversized blazer, €179 at & Other Stories
Blazers have always been a great staple but this season they are big news. Keep them oversized and in neutral tones to complement the other pieces in your wardrobe. This & Other Stories wonder was a sell-out last year and is back once more to take over our Instagram feed. The wool makes it a heavier option than most, but it’s perfect for chilly August nights and the perfect piece of everyday autumn outerwear. Wear it over a slip dress and heeled sandals this month and with a light polo knit and jeans come September.
Ankle boots
Honour Western Boots, €125 at Topshop
Although many women wait until the leaves are falling to invest in a pair of boots, August is the best time, as some of the most covetable styles appear once the last of the sales rails disappear. This crocodile print western pair from Topshop will complement any of your summer dresses and look great when worn with shorts and a T-shirt. Ankle boots are always worth the investment.
Midi dress
Siena green polka dot tea dress, €152 at Kitri
Ah, the humble midi dress. Seriously, what did any of us wear before they took over our fashion consciousness? The midi dress is such a hero piece; from day to night, work events to weekend fun, it’s a winner. Buy one now and you’ll wear it (almost) every day until Christmas. This green polka dot number from Kitri is my pick. Green is a superb colour in both summer and autumn and the polka dot print looks chic and classic.
Relaxed trousers
Lyocell-blend trousers, €49.99 at H&M
Trousers and I have never got along, particularly a relaxed fit. Having short legs means I go to a tailor far too often and whenever I wear them trousers I can’t help but feel as if something is not quite right. Nevertheless, this shape will be everywhere this season. The street-style of Copenhagen Fashion Week was like a love-letter to this particular style. Everyone who was anyone was wearing the unofficial uniform of an oversized blazer, strappy heels and relaxed trews and it was divine. This H&M pair is from its new Conscious Collection, and the billowing silhouette is a reflection of the AW19 collections. Wear now with a T-shirt and sandals and switch to an oversized jumper and trainers later in the month. And, if you want to be seriously on-trend, wear yours a little longer than usual to get that effortless Copenhagen chic.
Boilersuit
Simply Be denim boilersuit, €62.21 at ASOS
I will put my hand up and say I didn’t believe the hype around boilersuits… but then I bought one and fell irrevocably in love. Comfortable, flattering, sexy and chic; a boilersuit is a dream buy. I think denim will always look classic so you’ll never regret the purchase. When worn with Birkenstocks and sunglasses, it’s the epitome of cool, but looks just as effective when styled with heels and avant-garde accessories for autumn events.
