1980s’ taffeta is back in a big way, and these 7 high street pieces are the perfect way to try it out

1980s’ taffeta is back in a big way, and these 7 high street pieces are the perfect way to try it out

Feeling nostalgic? The ’80s are calling and one of it’s most controversial materials is making a comeback

When you think of ’80s fashion, the word ‘tasteful’ doesn’t exactly come to mind. Big hair, big sleeves and big shoulders were all trademarks of the time, and while it may not have been the most classic of looks, it was certainly a time where women could have fun with fashion, and let their imaginations with colour and silhouettes run wild. This was the decade of power dressing, where for the first time, women began to exercise their increasing power in the workplace through their clothes, and realise the power of a great outfit in making you feel confident.

There are certain materials that are synonymous with the ’80s, and most of them we were sure we would never see again. However, one such fabric has made a comeback this season, and we are actually finding ourselves dying to try it out.

Taffeta. But not as you know it — there are no garish metallic hues here, no Rachel Green’s Bo Peep bridesmaid’s dress to be seen. We aren’t talking about debs dresses and perms — we’re talking a tasteful and understated way to inject some 80’s fun into your 2020 party outfits.

The taffeta of this season is mostly in dark or berry hues, with a few pops of bubblegum pink to really ramp up the fun. If you’re going big with the colours or shapes, keep the rest of the outfit understated — instead of backcombed hair, slick it back in a grown-up do, and stay away from the blue eyeliner. Pair your taffeta puff-sleeve top with modern straight leg jeans and ankle boots, to show its versatility in being dressed up or down. And jewellery? Stay away from bedazzling — simple chunky gold hoops will do just fine.

Need some inspiration? Here are seven of our favourite high street pieces to kickstart your nostalgic wardrobe.
