Wellness Diaries: Pat Kane, founder of Reuzi

Pat Kane, sustainability strategist, speaker, author and the founder of sustainability lifestyle shop Reuzi shares her self-care tools and rituals, from meal prep to hemp tea.

I wake at… 7am religiously. Weekends included!

The first thing I do every morning is… I make my bed as soon as I am up. I strongly believe that making your bed in the morning can have a very real impact on how productive your day will be.

My morning routine is… very consistent. We wake up and I prepare brekkie for the boys and pack their lunchboxes. As for myself, I always start the day with a shot of probiotics – Symprove is a winner! – and a large glass of cold water. There’s something about the cold water that wakes my insides up! I grab a quick shower and off to drop the boys to school I go. On chilly days, I take my reusable cup containing a rich double expresso with me…

I can’t go to work without… having a shower. I simply cannot start my day without a shower.

The self-care tool I use every day is… meditation and skincare. Meditation helps me alleviate stress and focus on what really matters. Skincare… well, skincare is a must! I want to age gracefully and I am constantly looking for ways to keep my skin fresh. My friend Jennifer Rock is the Skin Queen and someone who I will always go for advice on the latest and the greatest on that front.

The best part of my day is… mornings! I am a morning person for sure, I feel energised and productive. My husband thinks it’s hilarious because he likes to start his day slowly and I am
at 300km/h at 7am!

The most challenging part of my day is… As entrepreneurs, we wear so many hats – sales, marketing, finance and even social media managers! Some days are just so busy so I’d say “the juggle” can be really challenging!

I engage with self-care every day by… taking time to recharge by going for a walk or a run. Our electrical devices need to be recharged frequently; however, we seldom take time to recharge ourselves, which often results in burnout and a compromised immune system.

My daily self-care checklist routine includes… skincare, at least 2 litres of water and early nights. The latter is not always possible but God knows I try!

The quickest, smallest thing I do for myself every day is… pray. I am not the traditional religious type, mom always says that my God is a Goddess and she’s right. I believe in feminine power and I carry that energy with me wherever I go.

I know it’s been a good day if… I hit the bed and fall asleep straight away. To me, there’s nothing worse than not being able to sleep well thinking of pending tasks, etc.

I switch off from work by… cooking dinner, believe it or not. I love cooking but because my time is so tight I decided to get myself Peel meals – an Irish and vegan meal prep service that arrives weekly with everything I need to make delicious dinners happen!

Before I go to bed, I’ll… grab a cup of tea – Ethos Rest Hemp Tea is my fave right now! – and follow my skincare routine. This is a non-negotiable.

After a long work week, I destress by… going for a walk around our village and catching up with my local pals. I love hearing how their week went and just shooting the breeze!

My go-to comfort meal is… on weekends, we grab some original Italian food at Pala in Foxrock village, on weekdays I have to say warm bowls of brown rice and fiid meals save me big time!

When I really need a moment to myself, I always… prepare a bath for myself. It’s really the only time I am totally offline (too afraid to drop my phone in the water!).

Something I try to do for myself every day is… eat well. I find that nothing beats knowing that you’ve given your body a good chance to thrive. I am hugely interested in all things gut health and try my best to keep my body fuelled with the right things.

The most reflective moment in the day is… when I find myself alone in the morning, post school drop-offs. It’s when I take a few minutes to grab myself a coffee and prepare for the
day ahead.

The one person, place or thing guaranteed to give me joy is… my sister. She’s my rock, the bravest woman I’ve ever met and it’s just a joy to have her in my life. I can’t go a day without talking to her!

I wish I could do reading more mindfully. Some days are just hectic so I do find it hard to concentrate which is a shame! Work in progress…

Everyone should try… to make better choices when going about their days. It’s like that saying ‘We don’t have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world’. On that note, folks, I am here to help! Let’s change the world, one small change at a time. reuzi.ie
