‘Wellness is a daily commitment to becoming the best version of myself’: IMAGE’s Alannah Owens
For IMAGE's Alannah Owens, her wellness routine is more than about staying healthy; it's a commitment to becoming the best version of herself every single day, even when it feels hard.
I’ve come to truly understand the value of wellness. Many years ago, I struggled with my mental health and, as a result, neglected self-care and compassion towards myself. Over time, through patience, reflection and a lot of learning, I realised that wellness is so much more than a trend.
It’s a daily commitment to becoming the best version of myself.
As we move into the colder months, when the evenings draw in and moods can dip, I always make an extra effort to prioritise my wellbeing even on the days it feels hardest to do so.
My Rituals
Therapy and connection
I try to go to therapy once a month, or at least have an honest chat with someone I trust about life’s ups and downs. A problem shared truly is a problem halved.
Evening wind-down
Allowing myself proper downtime before bed is essential for a good night’s sleep. Life can get hectic, and my mind tends to stay active long after the day is done, so I make a conscious effort to slow down and switch off.
Movement and strength
Exercise has become a cornerstone of my wellness routine. I find that attending a class helps me focus, and the environment tells my mind, ‘This is your space to move.’ I started Pilates a year ago and, while it was challenging at first (I hate not being good at something), I stuck with it. Now, I feel stronger and more balanced, and it’s one of those workouts where you really do see results.
A calm space
It might sound simple, but having a tidy, comfortable space makes a huge difference to my peace of mind. Fresh sheets, an organised room and a beautifully scented candle instantly lift my mood. Ritual candles are my go-to for creating that calm, cosy atmosphere.
Nourishment and hydration
Eating well and staying hydrated might seem obvious, but I notice a real improvement in my energy and mood when I make the effort. A balanced meal and enough water throughout the day are small acts of care that go a long way.
Stretch and release
A newer addition to my routine and one that wasn’t entirely by choice is stretching. Long car journeys and hours at a desk can leave me feeling achy, so I’ve started incorporating gentle stretches into my week. My boyfriend (who’s a bit of a fitness fanatic) constantly reminds me how important it is and, annoyingly, he’s right.
Simple joys
While some people live for big nights out, my perfect day looks a little different. It’s all about the rituals that keep me grounded: a morning Pilates session, good food, a beach walk, or going to any sports matches and spending time with loved ones. Nothing fills my cup quite like being with family and friends, especially my mum and sister. Those moments of laughter, chats and connection are what truly nourish my soul.
And to finish the day, I love either heading out for a lovely Italian dinner or staying in with a Thai takeaway and winding down for the evening.
Oh, and I’ll admit it, I find comfort in rewatching my favourite shows again and again. There’s something about the familiar that feels like a warm hug at the end of a long day.
