Meet the neighbourhood: A local’s guide to Cashel

Cashel is the perfect spot for a day out, from incredible food to shopping for local finds. Editor of IMAGE Interiors Megan Burns shares some of her favourite spots.

In our latest series “Meet the Neighbourhood”, we’re introducing readers to the towns less travelled. Next up is Cashel in Co Tipperary, perhaps most famous for the impressive Rock of Cashel, but with plenty more to do on your visit.

Whether you want to enjoy an incredible meal, grab a great coffee or shop for some locally-made Irish design pieces, here are the spots not to miss on your visit.

Coffee

Any good day starts with a cup of coffee, and 65 Degree Coffee Bar is one of my favourites. Using beans from Co Tipperary roaster The Old Barracks, the coffee is always great, and they also have sweet treats to enjoy. They’re also dog-friendly if you have your four-legged friend in tow.

Shopping

Whether you’re looking for a gift for a loved one, some gorgeous Irish skincare for yourself or a piece to make your home feel warm and welcoming, Kilkenny Design on the main street is a must-visit.

Full of finds from local makers and brands, it has so much to offer. On a recent visit, I spotted some deliciously retro Orla Kiely tumblers, beautiful pottery from Nicholas Mosse, and divine skincare from Pestle & Mortar.

There’s also a range of cosy knitwear by Kilkenny Design, perfect for preparing for winter’s cooler temperatures, and they had a selection of Christmas decorations – it’s never too early to start getting ready!

For a real treat for yourself or someone else make sure to check out their range of Voya products, including heavenly diffusers, nourishing serums and products to make your bath or shower feel utterly luxurious. Founded in Sligo, Voya harnesses the power of seaweed across its range.

On my visit, I was also sorely tempted by luxurious McNutt throws in a variety of soft shades. These throws are a real forever piece, made from natural wool and woven in Donegal, and are the perfect way to add some cosiness to your home, whether draped across a sofa or bed.

There are plenty of other shops to explore in the town, from Cashel Flowers to pick up a bouquet or houseplant, to The Antique Shop, worth exploring for some interesting finds.

Lunch

Head to Mikey Ryan’s gastropub for a delicious lunch or dinner, a sister property to the luxurious Cashel Palace Hotel, so you know you can expect amazing quality. From a light lunch to a three-course meal, both the food and service are excellent.

Sights

After your meal, take Bishop’s Walk from the main street up to the impressive Rock of Cashel, which gives you impressive views back over the town and of the surrounding countryside.

The dramatic cluster of mediaeval buildings is a must-see and includes a round tower, a high cross, a Gothic cathedral, and a fifteenth-century tower house. Guided tours are available so you can learn even more about the history of this fascinating site.
