Jessie Buckley makes history and all the winners from the 98th Academy Awards
Jessie Buckley makes history in becoming the first Irish actor to win an Academy Award in the category of Best Actress! One Battle After Another takes home a total of six Oscars, with Sinners scooping four.
“I would like to dedicate this to the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart,” Jessie Buckley says in her acceptance speech. “We all come from a lineage of women who continue to create against all odds.”
Killarney’s very own Jessie Buckley has scooped the Best Actress statuette at the 98th Academy Awards! Another Irish win came in the form of Richard Baneham’s Best Visual Effects award, which brings the total number of Academy Award wins he’s got under his belt to three.
“First and foremost, thank you to our families,” Richie Baneham says during his acceptance speech. “There are 2,200 artists. This is a massive, massive collaboration on the VFX side. We also overlap with everybody on the movie. So, to all our families, it’s like, this is everything. Truly, truly everything. Jim Cameron. Go raibh mile maith agat. He literally informs every frame of the movie and I think has a big part of the effects.”
One Battle After Another made quite a splash throughout the evening, winning across six categories including Best Picture and a brand new category this year, Best Casting. Paul Thomas Anderson won for Best Directing, Sean Penn won for Best Supporting Actor, and they were also awarded Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
Sinners won Best Original Score and Best Original Screenplay, Michael B Jordan took home the title of Best Actor, and Autumn Durald Arkapaw won for Best Cinematography, becoming the first woman of colour to achieve this merit.
Elsewhere, highlights from the ceremony included the first Oscars tie in ten years as The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva were named as joint winners of Best Live Action Short Film. ‘Golden’ from KPop Demon Hunters became the first K-Pop song to win Best Original Song.
