Where to stay

Lyrath Estate

Just a few minutes from the centre of Kilkenny but feeling like a country idyll, Lyrath Estate gives you both a tranquil escape and access to everything the city has to offer. The 17th-century estate house has been given a modern extension, and you can choose from rooms in the original manor house or their contemporary counterparts. Treat yourself to afternoon tea in the Lady Charlotte’s Drawing Room, and make sure to leave time for a treatment in the spa. Summer offers the chance to make the most of the 170-acre estate, including lakes, gardens and woodlands – follow one of the walking trails, or borrow a bike to cover more ground.

Butler House

For those who want to be right in the city, Butler House is the Dower House of Kilkenny Castle, built in 1786 and now a charming place to stay. As well as its Georgian rooms, the Butler House Walled Garden is a real sanctuary in the heart of the city. It even has its own private entrance to the Castle Yard, full of Irish craft, and Kilkenny Castle and parklands. Enjoy dinner in the Garden View Room, before strolling a few streets over to sample the city’s bustling pubs. 

Newpark Hotel

Not far from the city centre, Newpark Hotel is perfect for those who want to explore the city but have a serene space to retreat to afterwards. Relax in the spa, including an infinity pool, while if you’re bringing the kids, they’ll love Jurassic Newpark, a dinosaur-themed park, located on the hotel grounds. Enjoy a meal on the bright terrace, in Scotts Brasserie, or book afternoon tea for a real treat.

Arán

Start the day at Arán, that has both a bakery and a bistro opposite each other on Barrack Street. Choose from sourdough loaves and an array of incredible pastries in the bakery, while the all-day brunch menu makes use of local ingredients for dishes such as tortilla bowls and croissant French toast – it’s best to book ahead as this is a popular spot.

Lyla’s

For a buzzy evening out, look no further than Lyla’s, a recently opened cocktail bar and restaurant with an eye-catching interior and a menu that stands out from the crowd – tableside-served tiramisu anyone?

Campagne

This one Michelin-starred restaurant is known for its confident approach to dishes – balanced perfectly, allowing ingredients to shine. Chef-owner Garrett Bryne takes French cuisine as his inspiration, and his partner Brid Hannon ensures the atmosphere is relaxed, while the decor is warm and unfussy.

Castle Yard

Kilkenny is known for its rich tradition of craft, and Castle Yard at Kilkenny Design Centre is the perfect example. A community of curated independent craft makers and designers set in the historic centre of the city, it offers the chance to see craftspeople at work, and shop an incredible range of Irish products. Pop into Kilkenny Design while you’re there for even more homegrown pieces. From pottery to jewellery, and leather goods to skincare, it’s the perfect place to pick up a souvenir from your trip.

Peaches Boutique

Lovers of fashion should head to this store on St Kieran’s St for an edit of joyful pieces for every occasion, including Irish brands. Owners Andrea and Siobhan and their team are always on hand to help you find exactly what you’re looking for.

Nicholas Mosse

Just a 10 minute drive outside of the city, don’t miss the chance to visit the pottery where this iconic Irish spongeware is made. Not only can you learn more about the process behind these handcrafted pieces, you can browse through an extensive selection of pottery, fabrics, accessories, and you might even nab a bargain in the seconds section. Visit the café afterwards and enjoy the displays of old designs that adorn the walls.
