Storm Dennis: Forecasters warn of more snow, wind and rain

More wintry weather is expected across Ireland as Storm Dennis approaches

As you may have already noticed if you’re out and about today, it’s still mighty cold across Ireland – and the bad weather is set to continue. While the current status yellow weather warning for snow and ice will lift at 10 am, more wintry weather is expected throughout the week as Storm Dennis nears the country.

Met Éireann has said to expect, “scattered wintry showers early Wednesday with some snowfall accumulations, especially in the west and north. Some disruption to travel is possible, particularly over higher routes.”

By Wednesday afternoon and evening, there will be temperatures of just 4 to 8 degrees, with rain moving into the southwest and spreading northwards. Not only that, but winds will pick up (becoming gale force at times) on the south and west coasts. By night time, with temperatures falling as low as -1 Celsius in Connacht and Ulster, some of the rain showers may start to fall as sleet or snow.

Met Éireann says these wintry showers should clear the country via the north coast sometime on Thursday morning – but it will still be incredibly cold. Once darkness falls, it’s likely that frost will start to develop. Temperatures on Thursday night will range from just 0 to 3 Celsius, with strengthening winds.

While Friday will be unsettled with some dry spells, the weather will become much worse (and extremely wet) by Saturday.

Met Éireann says there will be, “a very wet and very windy start to Saturday in association with Storm Dennis. Rain in all areas during the morning, heaviest in the west, clearing to blustery showers during the afternoon.

“Strong and gusty southerly winds veering southwesterly with gales on coasts. Another band of heavy rain crosses the country on Saturday night with southwesterly winds remaining strong to gale force. Lows of 2 to 5 Celsius.”

This is set to continue throughout Sunday, with forecasters saying, “A wet and windy start to Sunday, with rain giving way to blustery, heavy showers during the afternoon. Showers will turn wintry over high ground. Very windy again on Sunday, strongest in the west with southwesterly gales or strong gales on coasts.”
