The new Quiet Luxury: 10 pieces to dress for understated power this autumn

Quiet Luxury 2.0 isn’t about disappearing into beige, writes IMAGE Contributing Fashion Editor and stylist Sinéad Keenan. It’s about building a wardrobe so considered, every piece earns its keep for years to come, and knowing the most powerful style statement is the one you never have to explain.

There was a time when luxury fashion was all about being seen. Glossy logos. Recognisable silhouettes. The kind of bag you could spot from across a crowded street. But the style pendulum has swung hard in the other direction, and in its place we have a quieter, more discerning approach. One where the value of a piece lies not in who knows it, but in who doesn’t.

Quiet luxury first found its momentum in the early 2020s as a reaction to fashion’s maximalist phase. An antidote of soft cashmere, pared-back tailoring and a palette that rarely strayed beyond camel, black or stone. But in 2025, it’s evolved into something more nuanced, a Quiet Luxury 2.0. if you will. The focus is on impeccable cut, elevated fabrications, and subtle design details that only reveal themselves up close.

It’s an aesthetic built for those who see fashion as a long game. Who’d rather invest in a coat they’ll wear for a decade than a micro-trend they’ll tire of by Christmas? And yet, it’s not austere. The AW25 version is soft, tactile, and layered with personality. More about how a garment moves and feels than whether anyone can name the label.

Accessories play an equally crucial role in this evolution. Where last season’s bags were structured and boxy, AW25 introduces subtle curves, slouchy yet refined totes. Jewellery stays low-key but considered. A single sculptural earring or a molten gold cuff worn over a sleeve. Everything is intentional, but nothing feels over-styled. It’s the kind of luxury that doesn’t need to announce itself, because those who know, know.

Here’s some of my favourite pieces to make the look your own this season, with ten key pieces that embody the new quiet.

01. The Luxury Wool Sculptural Coat

More than just outerwear, this is a wardrobe architecture piece. Look for a clean, strong silhouette, cocooned sleeves, a generous lapel, or a subtly curved shoulder, cut in a double-faced wool or a cashmere blend. It should feel substantial yet fluid, and instantly pull a look together whether worn over denim or an evening dress.

02. The Cashmere Knit

The magic of the perfect cashmere knit isn’t in its obviousness, it’s in its weight, softness, and longevity. This season’s best come in tonal neutrals that layer seamlessly, skimming the frame without bulk. Pair with wide-leg tailoring for work or with a silk midi skirt for evenings that don’t demand heels.

03. The Understated Luxe Bag

Forget screaming status. The AW25 bag is deliberately anonymous to the untrained eye, but to those who know, its quality is unmistakable. Hand-stitched seams, buttery leather, weighty but discreet hardware. A piece to keep in rotation for years, not seasons.

04. The Midi Skirt

No longer relegated to office wear, the new midi skirt moves with you. Styles in softly structured wool, soft leather, velvety suede or fluid satin fall to the mid-calf with just enough swish to feel feminine, but not so much that they lose their sharpness. Ideal with a tucked-in cashmere crewneck or a slouchy tailored blazer.

05. The Suede Jacket

There’s something quietly decadent about suede. The way it absorbs light, the way it ages beautifully over time. This season’s versions are softly tailored and unlined, in shades of mushroom, caramel or chocolate. Wear over a silk shirt for a contrast in textures, or with a polo neck for easy layering.

06. The Statement Flats

Proof that power dressing doesn’t have to involve heels. The AW25 flat is indulgent in feel but minimal in design. Glove-soft leather, an almond or square toe, and the kind of craftsmanship that moulds to your foot over time. Whether a pump, a ballet flat or loafer, they’re understated, but never forgettable.

07. The Slouchy Soft Tailoring

Structured suiting has given way to something far more relaxed. Think unlined blazers with just enough shape, trousers that drape rather than cling, and a belt or tie fastening instead of a rigid closure. Tailoring that moves with you, not against you.

08. The Dress

For quiet luxury, a dress should be more about the cut than the embellishment. This season, it’s all about fluid midis in silk crepe or bias-cut satin, clean shifts in wool blends, and long-sleeved knits with elegant proportions. Day to night without a thought.

09. The Jewellery

The jewellery of Quiet Luxury 2.0 is as tactile as it is timeless. Molten gold cuffs, sculpted hoops, and organic-shaped rings. They don’t scream for attention; they simply belong with whatever you’re wearing. Pieces you keep on, not take off.

10. The Silk Shirt

The silk shirt is the stealth wealth MVP. Perfectly weighted so it falls just right, in tones like ivory, storm grey, or forest greens. It works under suiting, tucked into a skirt, or half-unbuttoned with tailored trousers. The mark of a good one? You’ll reach for it on days you need to look polished but not overly styled.

It’s no coincidence that Quiet Luxury 2.0 feels so relevant now. After years of logo mania and trend-chasing, there’s a collective craving for clothes that last, both in quality and aesthetic. Economic uncertainty and sustainability concerns are reshaping the way we shop, pushing us toward investment pieces that work harder and feel timeless, without feeling boring. AW25 answers that need with garments that are understated but never anonymous, the kind of pieces that let the wearer take centre stage, rather than the branding.
