The Best Oscar Dresses of All Time

With the Oscars nearly upon us, we thought it’d be fun to compile all of our favourite dresses from Hollywood’s biggest night of the year. From Audrey Hepburn in Givenchy to Lupita Nyong?o in Prada, we take a look back at the gowns we gushed over. Which one is your favourite? We defy you not to be hard-pushed to choose. Plus, check back here on Monday for our fashion coverage of all the hits and misses from this year’s Academy Awards. And here are our style winners, in no particular order. Drum roll please…

Audrey Hepburn accepted her Best Actress Oscar for her role in the film Roman Holiday wearing this beautiful chic and simple white floral gown by up-and-coming designer Hubert de Givenchy. She went on to become his muse and the actress would wear his clothes for seven of her most outstanding movies.

Powder blue Prada was Lupita Nyong’o’s dress of choice for last year’s Academy Awards. The silk georgette soleil pleated gown was designed by Nyong’o’s stylist, Micaela Erlanger, in collaboration with Prada, and the actress had a lot of input also. When she commented on the red carpet that the colour reminded her of Nairobi, #NairobiBlue quickly started trending on Twitter. We can’t wait to see what she wears on Sunday night.

Jennifer Lawrence’s most memorable Oscar fashion moment might have been when she wore Christian Dior couture.. and then promptly tripped up in it, but we love this look from two years previously in 2011. At just 22, and still quite unknown, she donned a Calvin Klein Collection gown and looked every inch a superstar.

Hilary Swank shocked and amazed at the 2005 Academy Awards in a midnight blue Guy Laroche gown that was business at the front and party at the back. With its long sleeves and high-neck it looked understated and demure… until she turned around that is. Made from 27 yards of silk jersey, she looked elegant and chic. Her best accessory? The Oscar she won for her role in Million Dollar Baby, naturally.
