With so much of our head and heart invested in our children, how does it feel when they eventually leave the nest? Amy Lynch talks to women who have launched their birds and watched them fly.

Last week I bumped into an old work friend in the supermarket. We did the usual “How are the kids?” catch-up right there in the fruit and veg aisle. We talked about how crazy it is that both of mine are now in secondary school, yet she remembered me pregnant in the office.  But when it came to telling me about her eldest son, she burst into tears. He’s just left to work in Australia....
