Looking for some paint inspiration? Colour expert Dervla Farrell shares the shades that will feel fresh this season

It can be so hard to decide when staring at colour cards, which is why expert advice is so helpful.

Paint is one of the quickest, cheapest, and most successful ways to totally transform a space, so chances are you have a room that you’re considering giving a fresh coat to.

However, with so many colours available, it can be impossible to even know where to start. Luckily, Colourtrend colour expert Dervla Farrell has shared some of the most important themes that are popular at the moment.

Once you have identified the general look you want to achieve, she’s also given us some specific colour suggestions to help point you in the right direction when it comes to selecting samples to try.

Comforting neutrals

Shell Cove, Colourtrend

Perfect for those who want a simple, bright space, Dervla recommends choosing neutrals with an organic quality rather than harsh whites or greys.

“An overall theme for 2022 when it comes to colour and design has been earth tones and grounding the home,” Dervla says. “Shades like the canvas off white Shell Cove and the mushroom tone Batch Loaf give a sense of warmth while keeping your space bright and airy.”

Soft greens

Palm House Fountain, Colourtrend

Green is a perennial favourite, but the emphasis at the moment is on organic greens inspired by nature.

“The shift towards softer and organic greens has been welcomed with olive tones like Palm House Fountain and smoked sages like Silver Birch being the perfect way to achieve this feel,” Dervla says.

Darker hues

Dressage, Colourtrend

Dervla says that moody tones are becoming popular once again. “A colour to watch for the end of 2022 moving into 2023 is off blacks like Dressage, particularly on kitchen cabinets and as feature walls.”
