Driven by Adventure, inspired by Defender. We head north to Co Antrim for its dramatic driving routes, with some luxurious pitstops along the way.

Where to stay

Galgorm, Ballymena

Tucked away in 450 acres of parkland, Galgorm resort feels like its own world. Whether you opt for one of the country-inspired hotel rooms, or book a Shepherd’s hut, riverside suite or cottage, you’ll find the perfect option for your stay. Your four-legged friends can even come along, with dogs permitted to stay in any of the lodge accommodation. Don’t miss the renowned spa, where you can choose from an extensive range of treatments. Then take your time luxuriating in the thermal spa village, which includes saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, indoor and outdoor pools, heated loungers, and the famed snow cabin, featuring powder snow and ice crystals maintained at -10°C for an invigorating refresh.

The Salthouse

Perched above the coastal town of Ballcastle, The Salthouse is a luxury eco-conscious hotel. With views of the town, sea, and spectacular surrounding landscape, it feels serene, yet is just a few minutes from the town. You can choose to stay in the hotel itself, in one of the Seaview Suites, or in the Eco-Lodges that sleep up to six, and even have their own hot tub. Don’t miss out on the renowned breakfast, where you get an afternoon tea-style tray of breads and pastries to enjoy, plus a cooked breakfast of your choice.

The Bushmills Inn

Ideal for an autumn escape, The Bushmills Inn was originally a coaching inn in the 1600s, but has been transformed into a 4-star boutique hotel and restaurant. It’s still full of nooks and cosy corners, think inglenook turf fires to hayloft snugs. Each of the 41 bedrooms has been individually decorated, and are full of character. While you’re there, make sure to visit the world’s oldest whiskey distillery, Old Bushmills Distillery.

Where to eat

Ursa Minor

Head up to Ursa Minor in Ballycastle, where Dara and Ciara Ohartghaile have long been making some of the most exciting bakes the country has to offer. Not only is their sourdough made from organic UK and Irish stoneground flour, and their croissants and other laminated pastries are slow fermented for three days, you’ll always find bakes made with seasonal toppings. Don’t leave without picking up a sandwich, the fillings change depending on what’s in season locally, but it will without doubt be one of the best sandwiches you’ve ever eaten – perfect fuel for a scenic drive. They occasionally host dinners and other events too, so keep an eye on their Instagram.

Maegden

A cheesemongers and quality food shop that also serves legendary cheese toasties and coffee, Maegden use only products from  independent, authentically artisan local suppliers, so everything is of the highest quality. Treat yourself to an extra portion of homemade pickles on the side, and make sure to stock up on treats to take home with you.

Babushka

Set in the most incredible location on the South Pier in Portrush, Babushka serves up truly excellent coffee, breakfast and lunch. Nab a table outside if the sun is shining, or settle in an indoor spot to watch the waves roll in without the whip of the Atlantic breeze. Food options blend traditional Northern Irish fare (bacon and soda bread) with twists from further afield (soy and gochujang glazed slow braised crispy pork belly), so everyone should be happy, and don’t leave without a salted caramel square.

Where to shop

The Designerie

For the best in local craft, take the dramatic coastal drive from Ballycastle to Bushmills (there are several scenic stops along the way, including the famous Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge) where you’ll find The Designerie. A gorgeous curation of Irish craft from jewellery to art, ceramics, and textiles, it’s not just a shop, but is also a workspace for local craftspeople – head up to the first floor where you can see makers at work. There’s even a selection of local food, so you can pick up condiments infused with whiskey from the famous distillery nearby for a truly local taste – something to pack into the car before the epic drive home.

The White House

Founded in 1891, The White House department store has long been a fixture of Portrush, and is still popular thanks to its curated range of homeware and clothing. They have a range of local products including art and food products, the perfect place to pick up a souvenir from your trip.

Woodgreen Furniture & Interiors

Interiors lovers will enjoy a trip to Woodgreen in Ballymena. With a great selection of furniture and accessories it’s ideal whether you’re looking for a larger piece, or simply some finishing touches. Their staff are also incredibly helpful if you have any questions or need ideas.
