Coronavirus update: Italy and Spain record lowest daily death toll since March

Both Italy and Spain have recorded their lowest daily death toll from Covid-19 as the countries continue to fight the battle against the virus

Italy and Spain have reported their lowest daily death toll from the coronavirus since mid-March.

In Spain, the number was below 100 for the first time in two months.

Spain had implemented a strict lockdown to stop the spread of Covid-19, which threatened to overpower the country’s health system. Yesterday the number of confirmed cases hit 231, 350 and the death toll increased by 85 to 27,650.

However, health emergency chief Fernando Simon warned the low numbers could be a result of slow reporting over the weekend.

In Italy – which was the epicentre of the virus at one point – the daily death toll number was 145. This is the lowest figure since March 9. The number of recorded cases was 676 making it the lowest number reported since March 4.

The death toll in Italy is 31,908 and is the third highest in the world after America and the UK. The number of confirmed cases now stands at 225,435.

Ireland

As Ireland heads into phase one of easing lockdown restrictions, the Department of Health yesterday confirmed a further 10 deaths and 64 cases of coronavirus in the country. This brings the total number of deaths here to 1,543 and cases to 24,112.

From today you can leave your home to go to work (if place of work is open), to go to shops, to exercise within 5 kilometres, to meet family or friends outdoors in groups of 4 or less and for medical reasons.

Public beaches and mountain walks will also be reopened. Social distancing rules will continue to be applied.
