This is the best brand to shop during the in-between months of March and April

This is the best brand to shop during the in-between months of March and April

The in-between months of March and April can be the trickiest to dress for; it’s not warm or cold but a bit of both at various times of the day. So it’s all about layers really, and inexpensive ones at that because who wants to blow their spring/summer clothing budget on transitional items? We all want to save our cash for that dreamy statement summer dress or very special pair of heels.

Uniqlo is one of those brands that I forget about for most of the year, but immediately visit when I want to offload my heavy overcoats and wintry sweaters. The brand’s strength is strong essentials – T-shirts, long-sleeve tops, cardigans and lightweight sweaters that can be mixed and matched to suit your style and the weather. The prices are unbeatable; 20-odd euro for a T-shirt and 30-odd for a sweater or cardigan, plus they feel nice to wear and don’t look as if they were bought for the same price as a good bottle of wine. Here are the items I’ll be picking up to get me stylishly though March and April.

French fashion icon and once muse of the late Karl Lagerfeld, Ines de la Fressange has created a capsule collection for Uniqlo since 2015. It’s designed to offer customers a hit of her Parisian cool and comprises a nice edit of simple pieces, including this cute crew neck sweater. I love the boyish hit of this jumper. Layered over a long-sleeve T-shirt and under a longline blazer (go for check this season), it will create a classic look that will see you through to “real” spring.

Ines striped crew neck jumper, €29.90

I love how a good linen shirt can create an utterly cool contrast when worn with distressed denim by smartening them up, but also make a pleated skirt feel less frothy. This is a terrific staple piece for this time of year. Don’t be afraid to layer pieces beneath a shirt as well as over. A very fine knit polo neck would look very chic and a long-sleeve T-shirt will give this piece a hit of urban cool.

Premium linen long-sleeve shirt, €34.90

I love wearing polo necks so I’m loathed to give them up until the sun is very firmly “out out”. These extra fine turtlenecks are perfect for this time of year not only because they’re lightweight but because they come in a variety of fresh, spring-like shades. I want one in each colour.

Extra fine merino wool turtleneck jumper, €14.90 (was €29.90)
