How Irish artist duo Jill & Gill mastered multitasking

Illustrator Jill Deering and printmaker Gillian Henderson are the founders of Jill & Gill, an award-winning Irish brand with a fresh approach to illustration and print across fine art, fashion and design.

They strive for sustainability and are always looking for unique ways to inject creativity into everything they do.

LIFE RIGHT NOW?

“Jill & Gill started as a one-off collaboration and grew organically over the last four years. In 2020, we opened a pop-up shop in Dublin City Centre under the Champion Green initiative, selling our work, along with pieces from other artists. It’s been a great success.”

WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO BE KNOWN FOR?

“Bringing the energy in everything we create.”

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT?

“We are both over the core business, but in the last year we’ve fallen into particular roles. Jill’s on logistics and operations and Gillian does sales and marketing. We tag-team on all the other everyday stuff like putting the bins out, grabbing coffee and doing lunch runs.”

BIGGEST TECH DEMAND IN 2020?

“We’ve always embraced technology in how we work, as we’ve always been an online business; Instagram is where we promote the business, interact with customers and showcase what we do as Jill & Gill. We see online as an important, if not the most important, aspect of the business. Through it, we can, and do, sell to Tokyo.”

HOW DO YOU CONNECT WITH EACH OTHER?

“Pretty much every which way. From Voice Notes to WhatsApp, DMs in Instagram, Pinterest pins and video calls.”

THOUGHTS ON THE GALAXY Z FOLD 2 5G?

“It’s perfect for multitasking. We loved how we could have our emails, Shopify account and Trello all open on the screen and work between them seamlessly. The camera is great too – it captured the vibrant colours in our work brilliantly.”

GOALS FOR 2021?

“We want to develop Jill & Gill as more of a lifestyle brand, expanding into the interiors and homeware market.”
