The season has just started to change and with that, so too will our wardrobes. We’re sadly waving goodbye to the longer evenings and hot weather, and our bodies must adapt to cooler temperatures and shorter days. This means swapping out light, breathable summer dresses and shorts for wardrobe staples have more versatility and wearability as the weather turns from hot and muggy, to cool and autumnal.
For this reason, we’re welcoming back the gilet – which has been graciously brought back in trend this year by some of our favourite catwalk designers. The no-sleeved coverup is the perfect mid-season wardrobe investment; ticking all the right boxes when it comes breaking away from summer and settling into autumn and winter. Below are 5 smart ways to wear this season’s most versatile accessory, and some perfect outfit inspiration, too.
Add a pop of colour
What better way to welcome a new season than with a bright, eye-catching colour combination? The metallic sheen is a perfect luxe addition to street style. If urban wear isn’t for you, pair your coloured gilet with a plain t-shirt or polo, skinny jeans and a smart shoe for the same striking result.
Statement Metallic Sleeveless Puffer Jacket, Asos, €67.57
Similar to last year, we can expect to see a rise in faux and real shearling jackets and gilets. While it’s possible to buy cheaper, synthetic shearling in every colour, natural shearling is irresistibly more luxurious. What’s more, the neutral, caramel colour will complement almost anything in your wardrobe.
Mix Short Sheepskin Gilet, Whistles, €585.00
Warm up with added layers
The great thing about gilets is, not only are they stylish and on-trend, but they’re incredibly necessary for hormonal August-through-October Irish weather (hot sweats mid-September, anyone?). The right gilet can rescue you from a cold spell and keep you cool during a tropical moment.
Cool down with short sleeves
The great(!!) thing about Irish weather is that between the months of August and October/November-ish, is it can be 23 degrees, hot and muggy, monsoon rain, or freezing blizzards – in one day. Gilets make for the perfect weather-changing companion and are the perfect size to throw into your bag or on the back seat. I love how this stylist at Paris Fashion Week creates a western-inspired ensemble complete with a longline black, chic gilet. A crisp white shirt or t-shirt under a gilet is a great and affordable way to smarten up an outfit this autumn.

Experiment with texture
The more colourful and patterned and textured the gilet, the more of a statement it will make. A quick look at this season’s catwalks tells us that we should expect more colour and bold patterns, and incorporating these new fashion rules into an accessory like the gilet is a fun and effective way to try something new. As a general rule, I suggest that if your gilet has a lot going on, keep everything else plain and simple. Let the gilet do the talking.
