Miya Burke of Pearl Oasis Studio: ‘Perfection can be a form of procrastination’
Pearl Oasis Studio is a brand inspired by all the things founder Miya Burke loves the most: nature, beauty, craftsmanship and culture. Here, the designer reflects on an interest that blossomed into a passion, the importance of buying less and buying better, and the future of Pearl Oasis Studio.
My name is Miya Burke, the founder of Pearl Oasis Studio, a Dublin-based jewellery brand celebrating the natural pearls. My background is diverse, I was born in China, educated and lived across Malaysia, the UK, and Ireland, and worked in luxury retail and construction consulting before launching Pearl Oasis Studio.
The idea for Pearl Oasis Studio came from a personal moment, but it grew from a deep appreciation for natural materials, sustainability, and timeless design. Every piece in the collection is designed and handcrafted in my home studio in Dublin, with a focus on high-quality natural pearls. It’s a blend of everything I love — nature, beauty, craftsmanship, and cultural inspiration.
My mission is to honour the quiet beauty of natural pearls and bring them into a modern context. I believe in slow, thoughtful design — where every pearl is selected for its natural beauty and every piece is made to last.
The ethos
My design philosophy is rooted in balance: strength and softness, elegance and simplicity. I draw on my background in luxury buying and global culture to create pieces that speak quietly but beautifully. My goal is for each woman to feel confident, elegant, and herself when wearing Pearl Oasis pearl jewellery.
My path into becoming a designer wasn’t linear, but it was deeply personal. I originally ran a successful luxury goods business for over five years. Then I trained and worked as a Quantity Surveyor. While I loved the world of craftsmanship and quality, I still felt something was missing creatively.
The moment that changed everything was receiving a pearl bracelet from Dior on Valentine’s Day. As beautiful as it was, I realised it wasn’t made with a natural pearl — and that sparked a deep curiosity in me. I began exploring natural pearls, and what started as interest soon turned into passion. I immersed myself in learning, took courses, and eventually began creating. That’s when I knew I wanted to design jewellery — pieces that were elegant, meaningful, and truly authentic.
At Pearl Oasis Studio, we specialise in natural pearl jewellery with a modern, minimalist aesthetic. Our collections include: earrings; bracelets; necklaces; and rings. All pieces are designed and handcrafted in Dublin, using carefully sourced freshwater and saltwater pearls.
We also offer a limited selection of one-off and exclusive designs, available only through selected boutiques or special events.
The logistics
When I started Pearl Oasis Studio with a passion for creating and a very limited budget. I didn’t have external investors or major funding. Everything was self-funded, built slowly and carefully, step by step.
In a way, that constraint became a strength. It pushed me to be resourceful, to learn every part of the process myself, and to grow the business organically and sustainably. I started small, focused on quality over quantity, and let the brand evolve at a natural pace. Of course, it hasn’t always been easy, but building something from the ground up with care and purpose has made the journey incredibly rewarding
When I was building Pearl Oasis Studio, I kept waiting for the “perfect moment” — more time, more funding, more confidence. But in reality, growth happened the moment I started taking small, consistent steps forward, even without all the answers.
That advice reminded me that perfection can be a form of procrastination. Starting imperfectly is better than not starting at all. It taught me to stay curious, stay adaptable, and let passion lead the way — the rest can be learned along the journey.
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned is that consistency matters more than perfection. When I started Pearl Oasis Studio, I wanted everything to be just right before launching — the branding, the photos, the packaging. But I quickly realised that building a business is an ongoing journey, and you grow by doing. Showing up consistently, listening to your customers, and refining along the way is far more powerful than waiting for the “perfect” moment.
I’ve also learned to trust my instincts, especially when it comes to design and storytelling. Staying true to your vision — even when it’s a slower path — leads to deeper connection and longer-lasting success.
The brands to know
A few of my favourite fashion accounts to follow include Chanel, Celine and The Row. Some of my favourite Irish brands include Aoifelifestyle, with her beautifully sculptural design language; Madigan Cashmere, who truly embodies timeless Irish luxury; Brog Shoes and George Horn Gloves.
My best fashion purchase has to be the Chanel 2.55 Classic Flap Bag, which I bought over ten years ago. At the time, it felt like a big investment, but looking back, it was absolutely worth it. The price has more than tripled since then, and it remains just as timeless and elegant today.
It’s also a reminder of the value of buying fewer, better things — an idea that inspires the design philosophy behind Pearl Oasis Studio.
Lately, I’ve been exploring the idea of a men’s pearl collection, celebrating pearls beyond traditional boundaries.
The legacy
My proudest moment by far has been becoming a mother. I have a beautiful, healthy, clever little boy who turns one year old this July, and he’s truly the light of my life. Balancing motherhood with building a brand has been challenging at times, but it’s also been deeply rewarding. He reminds me every day why I do what I do, to create a life filled with purpose, creativity, and love.
I want Pearl Oasis Studio to be remembered for timeless elegance, meaningful design, and the quiet beauty of natural pearls — jewellery made with heart, intention, and soul.
If I had to choose one person to wear my designs, Saoirse Ronan comes to mind. She’s graceful, grounded, and effortlessly modern — a perfect reflection of what Pearl Oasis Studio represents.
But honestly, the most meaningful moments are seeing everyday women — brides, mothers, daughters — wear our jewellery to mark special occasions in their lives. That’s the real honour.
