Irish-designed Valentine’s Day cards to help you show the love this year

Irish-designed Valentine’s Day cards to help you show the love this year

You don't have to write 365 love letters like Noah Calhoun did in 'The Notebook'... just the one will do.

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. A day to celebrate the ones you love, there’s no denying that the concept has become more and more commercialised over the years… so much so, that many now dread the day for the simple fact that it can be a bit of a money racket.

That said, you don’t have to spend a lot to tell someone what they mean to you. In fact, even a simple card often suffices. Whether you go for deep and meaningful, or opt for one of the slightly more irreverent ones out there, is up to you. Just write from the heart and you’re golden.

Prints of Ireland x Share Joy

Share Joy Pack of 3 Charity Cards, €10, Prints of Ireland

Prints of Ireland has teamed up with Share Joy, the non for profit social enterprise formed in memory of 23-year-old Arwen Sullivan who lost her battle with her mental health in 2020, to create three very Irish Valentine’s Day cards. Helping you show that special someone you love them and give back to a good cause all at once, all profits from the sale of these cards will go straight to Pieta House.

Etsy

Tayto Sandwich, €3.60, Etsy

When it comes to niche greeting cards, Etsy is where it’s at. Made by Karen Flan Art, this cute little number suggests that you and your other half go together like the ultimate Irish food combo: a Tayto sambo.

Market Street

Hey, Love Bug, €4, Market Street

If you’re over the superlative-laden “you’re the best person to ever exist in all of history” type Valentine’s Day cards, then perhaps something a little more understated will be more to your liking? This dotey love bug card is simple and to the point, and the empty inside means you can fill it with your own personal message too. Tempted to buy it for myself and frame it. Self-love and all that!

Designist

I Suppose You’d Be Wanting A Card, €4, Designist

The cynics amongst us will say that Valentine’s Day comes with too many expectations of grandeur. Hollywood tells us that large bouquets of red roses, expensive multi-course dinners and excessive PDA are the only ways to say “I love you”, but I disagree… sometimes all it takes is a card. This one is perfect for the begrudging romantics who feign disgust at the holiday but actually secretly love it.

Fingerdoodles

Shift?, €3, Fingerdoodles

I mean, that really says it all now doesn’t it? They say less is more, and this simple request will thoroughly charm them. A Dublin based art venture with a difference, Fingerdoodles tap into what they know, and in Ireland, a grá for shifting is in our blood. Especially on Valentine’s Day.

Gifts.ie

Turn The Heat Up, €3.99, Gifts.ie

Yes, it’s possible to make jokes about the cost of living and energy crises both fun and flirty. Nothing says true love quite like making sure your other half is nice and cosy — it’s those little acts of service that will make sure you’ve still got a Valentine this time next year!

Dublin Card Company

Stupid Sexy Flanders, €3.50, Dublin Card Company

If The Simpsons is a firm foundation for your relationship, Stupid Sexy Flanders really is a stunning option. As the man himself says, it’s like he’s wearing nothin’ at all, and what could be more alluring?

Sayers Studio

To My Otter Half Valentine’s Day Greetings Card, €4, Sayer’s Studio

Designed by Irish artist Hannah Sayers, her designs are semi-abstract works inspired mainly by the flora and fauna of Ireland. Drawing a lot of inspiration from her hometown on the Dingle Peninsula, Hannah creates using acrylic paint and a variety of mixed media and this otter card was simply too cute not to include.

Home Bird

Fancy A Shift, €3.95, Home Bird

Maybe you don’t have a significant other but there is someone you have your eye on, in which case this card cuts right to the point and says it so you don’t have to.

Maktus

Life Without You is Pintless, €4, Maktus

Life can be very serious these days. Between work, negative news stories and just trying to navigate the daily mundanities of our everyday schedules, it can be hard to stay upbeat… so learning to laugh at the little things is the key to staying sane… and who doesn’t love a good pun!?

Prints of Ireland

Love & Hugs, €4.50, Prints of Ireland

Valentine’s Day is often associated with just romantic love but friends deserve to be celebrated too. Partners come and go but good pals are forever so show your circle some grá with a handwritten card and a hug.

Loon Kaboon

Moira Rose I Love You Bebé, €4, Loon Kaboon

Whatever the occasion you’re celebrating – be it Valentine’s, Galentine’s or Palentine’s – this card is appropriate. TV’s most lovable diva, Moira Rose has sass and style in bucketloads though it’s her love for unusual words that really endears her to us. So, happy love day bebé!
