Winter’s New Power Pairings: From Cable Knits To Capes

How do you transform your wardrobe into more than the sum of its parts? Choose one of this season’s new power pairings. From cable knits and midi skirts to capes and cropped trousers, some things are simply better together.

The Aran jumper and midi skirt

Traditional cable-knit sweaters have been updated for winter with graphic cut-out details, collars and fresh colourways. If you plan to reinvent an old Aran, try embellishing it with this season’s must-have accessory, the brooch. At Michael Kors, above, the traditional oversized cable-knit sweater was subverted into a neat-fitting, belted piece that works as well for the office as weekend wear. Worn with a fluted midi skirt, it looks much more high fashion than old-fashioned.

Again, Michael Kors nailed this power pairing. This look is all about proportion; the longer-length cape and shorter-length pants create an unexpected silhouette that feels fresh and modern. The trick to nailing the look is to incorporate a variety of textures into your outfit. This creates definition and ensures you don’t look?like, well, a coat stand. A mix of leather, suede, faux-fur, lace and silk will elevate your outfit.

The shearling jacket and maxi dress

There’s a distinctly 1970s bohemian vibe to this look, showcased beautifully by Lanvin, above. The fluidity and femininity of the maxi dress paired with the traditionally boyish and heavyweight shearling jacket make?it an unexpected and seriously stylish combination. Again, contrasting textures is key to balancing the look. A neater-fitting shearling gilet is a good option if you’re worried about being overwhelmed by too much fabric.
