‘The Way You Look Doesn’t Matter’

By IMAGE
20th Aug 2014

First, Conchita Wurst stole our hearts when she reigned supreme at this year’s Eurovision song contest, and now the stunning Austrian drag singer teams up with Karl Lagerfeld for a photoshoot like no other. If you’ve been struggling to fully arise this morning, this is sure to wake you up. But this isn’t Conchita’s first foray into the world of fashion; she closed the show for Jean Paul Gaultier just four weeks ago. Teaming up with Lagerfeld, it’s clear Conchita’s here to stay. Will she become a fashionable force to be reckoned with? Certainly looks that way. Almost makes us wish we could grow a beard too.

Conchita models the latest in new-season Givenchy for Carin Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Book. As per The Telegraph, 25-year-old Conchita, who goes by the name of Tom Neuwirth when he’s not in drag, says during the photo-shoot interview: “I created Conchita as the goal of a very long? well, actually, it’s the story of my life.

“I grew up in a small Austrian village, a quite conservative one, and I was the weird little boy always dressing as a girl.?

“It was overwhelming for me, because besides having fun and dressing up every weekend, I got to learn from such great artists.?

“[Being trans] is very serious business, it’s a life within itself, so you mustn’t confuse the two. I always get the question, why the beard? And I think the beard, for me, has so many reasons and so many meanings, but at the end of the day, I want to show that you can achieve anything, that you can have a beautiful life with any kind of look, because the way you look isn’t the most important thing in life. It doesn’t matter.”

Wise words, and something we could all learn from, dontcha think? What do you make of these photos?
