Debbie Burgin, senior product manager of global gifts at Boots reveals 2018’s biggest gifting trends

Debbie Burgin, the senior product manager of global gifts at Boots, is fondly known at Boots as Mrs Christmas. She’s worked at Boots for 21 years, 19 of which have been spent travelling the world to trendspot inspiration from international markets for Christmas. Here, she reveals the must-have gifts at Boots this Christmas and what it’s like to spend almost two decades working on Christmas every day of the year. “The journey we take to source the perfect Christmas beauty gifts at Boots is a long one,” says Debbie. “We start typically in January for two years out. We’ll go to New York, we’ll go to Paris, London and big cities in the UK like Leeds and Birmingham.

We’ll also do some inspiration trips to Japan. I went to South Korea last year and to Taiwan, and we look at the beauty and gifting trends in all those markets and then we capture and distil all of that information to match trends to brands and compile a really exciting collection for our customers.”

The most popular gifting brands at Christmas time include No7, Soap & Glory and Ted Baker. They are three really big brands for us – each one ideal for very different people. No7 is really iconic for mums aged 35+. Ted Baker is for anybody – my daughter loves it and she’s 16, my mum loves it, and I love it. Soap & Glory, too, is a real classic.”

No7 Gel Finish Nail Colour Collection, €18

One of the biggest trends for us this season is called seasonal glamour. This is the trend we’ve really focused No7 on for this Christmas. With that, you can expect beautiful rose gold coming through and lots of metallic highlights – just the sort of extra sparkle to make it feel really Christmassy. Even the packaging is fabulous – look out for the beautiful swish, like a trail of glitter. Selected gift packs also boast a fabulous holographic effect for extra wow factor.

Jack Wills Mini Body Duo, €8

We are also excited about the more pared back retro luxe trend that’s big this year, where you’ll see branding and packaging take on a more minimal feel, offset with lovely warm colour tones and a textured finish to exude understated luxury at a very keen price point. Jack Wills is the perfect brand for this and the ideal gift for the hard-to-buy-for man in your life. This elegant, classical approach really lets the quality of the products shine through.

Liz Earle The Supercharged Ritual, €30

Botanical-based beauty products are also another big trend this year. Brands with a natural and/or botanically derived clinical orientation are hugely popular right now, and the great thing is you no longer need to spend a fortune to avail of some of the best brands out there. Liz Earle is one of our bestselling botanical brands.

STOCKING FILLERS

Soap & Glory The Mask Force Five Gift Set, €16.50

I will be gifting myself this year… The Mask Force Five gift set from Soap & Glory. What a perfect gift – having all the face masks in one pack so you can pamper any time and trial all the different ones as well. That’s my idea of heaven.

Ted Baker Bloom Bouquets Gift Set, €26

For my best friend, I’m thinking… the Ted Baker Bloom Bouquets gift set or their brand new limited edition fragrance for this Christmas, Chatsworth Bloom, which smells divine and feels really special with gorgeous packaging.

Soap & Glory Merry Kiss-Much Gift Set, €8

For my daughter, it will have to be… the Merry Kiss-Much set – or indeed anything from the Soap & Glory range. Their fun, vintage Americana look and feel makes the brand hugely popular with younger women – but to be honest, everyone loves it. I love it. It’s a classic.

Ted Baker Bathed In Blooms Gift, €13

For my mum… I’m saving the Bathed in Blooms gift set – for the ultimate pampering treat.
