Awards season fashion: black tie dressing inspired by the stars

From classic black to pastels, dresses strapless and embellished, these are the red carpet trends your favourite celebrities have been wearing so far this awards season.

All black

A common sighting at dressier events, black has long been associated with power and sophistication, making it a great choice when you want something easy that will still leave a lasting impression. It’s also incredibly versatile meaning you can tailor your look with make-up, accessories or jewellery. At this year’s IFTA awards, Galway actress Nicola Coughlan sported Irish design in a beautiful gúnaby Simone Rocha. Featuring buckle detailing at the neckline, ruffled layering and a gorgeous fishtail silhouette, Coughlan proved that all-black is anything but boring.

Pastels

Though the sun has been scarce in Dublin of late, we’re hoping that better weather is on the horizon and we’ll be taking a leaf out of Alison Oliver’s book when it comes to our SS25 wardrobe. Pictured here in an asymmetric cap sleeve dress by Loewe, it’s simple but flattering and this particular number has catapulted itself right up to the top of our wishlist.

Strapless

Stars like Saoirse Ronan and Bad Sisters’ Eva Birthistle braved the cold in strapless gowns at this year’s IFTAs – Ronan in a gorgeous blue Louis Vuitton number and Birthistle in vibrant red. Both opting for slick up-dos, the actors showed that sometimes, less is more, sticking to minimal accessories and dewy make-up. Needless to say, if you plan on going for a strapless dress for your next wedding or black tie event, a well-fitted, supportive bra is a must – ideally one with non-slip lining to avoid flashing anyone!

Embellished

Fans of sequins will be delighted to hear that sparkle is going nowhere this season and we saw several celebrities including Selena Gomez, Camila Cabello, Hannah Dodd and Demi Moore leaning into the razzle-dazzle on the red carpet. Cabello, A Complete Unkown star Monica Barbaro and Moore all went with figure-hugging halter dresses while Gomez wowed in custom Schiaparelli. Less is more might have worked for other styles but the embellished trend is a maximalist’s dream so lean into the glamour of it all.
