Always sunny: yellow is this season’s sunniest shade

There are few better ways to wave goodbye to a long winter and declare the arrival of spring/summer than a wardrobe shift from darker shades to seasonal brights.

Both a physical separation, as well as a mental shift, it’s a change that can leave us feeling refreshed and invigorated.

It’s something contributing fashion stylist Sinéad Keenan looks forward to: “Nothing says sun has returned more than the bright hues of the spring/ summer collections landing in stores. As someone who cherishes her uniform of black and navy, even I don a block of statement colour in the warmer months, and yellow is a standout shade this season.”

Yellow was spotted across the spring/summer 2023 catwalks, used in a variety of styles and silhouettes. “From sharp tailored suiting at Gabriela Hearst, Jacquemus and Stella McCartney to feminine dresses at Ulla Johnson, Erdem (left) and Jil Sander,” Sinéad notes, “this bright and sunny colour is guaranteed to offer a much needed dose of dopamine dressing to lift the spirits.”

Designers didn’t just stick to one shade, either, with everything from lemony hues at Loewe to buttery shades at Max Mara and bright neons at Balenciaga, so there’s a tone to suit all tastes.

Although it may not be considered the most wearable colour, Sinéad begs to differ: “If you are intimidated by the vibrancy,” she says, “opt for skirts or trousers that keep the colour away from the face. Accessories are another way to include yellow in your look, with a pop
from a shoe or a bag.”

For those that are more comfortable with neutrals, Sinéad advises combining yellow with tones like camel and beige, “for a more grounded, sophisticated take on the trend”. She also recommends knitwear as an informal way to wear the shade. “Team it with denim, khakis or neutral cargo pants.”

Whatever way you choose to incorporate it into your wardrobe, it’s the perfect way to add a touch of sunshine to your day, no matter what the Irish weather throws at us.
