13 fashion staples you won’t regret buying this Black Friday

Louise Slyth shares her top tips on what to buy to sidestep style slip-ups.

It’s almost that time of year again when all sense goes out the window and we are swept up in a tornado of excitement, panic and FOMO. Yes – you guessed it, Black Friday. I’m as guilty as the next woman of fashion faux pas, but over the years I’ve learned to focus on good staples that will stand the test of time.

Neutral knitwear

While it may not set your pulse a flutter, a trusty grey, black or cream knit can be layered over dresses, under a lighter jacket, and these days, add a bit of home glamour to your loungewear. Think cashmere hoody, chunky cardigan, or soft crew neck sweater.

Well-fitting jeans

The holy grail. Worth the time and effort to find your jean tribe. Once you do, buy in a variety of shapes and colours, and never stray. A pair of jeans that flatters your bum or flattens your tummy are worth their weight in gold.

A leather jacket

Timeless and perfect, choose wisely and a leather jacket can last you decades. It can look just as good over a ball gown as with a pair of jeans, if styled well. Avoid too much fuss and detail to ensure it lasts the test of time.

A black pencil skirt

The appeal of the pencil skirt is its versatility. Team with a chiffon blouse and heels and you are good to go from the office (when we get back) to the cocktail bar. This should cover the knee for a classy silhouette.

A unique belt

Something that adds a little je ne sais quoi to an ordinary dress or a pair of jeans. This could be splurgeville like Gucci, metallic leather, or a fuchsia satin number from a local boutique. Adding something unexpected will show you have your own sense of style, and sometimes a little splash of colour against navy or black can really elevate an outfit.

A trench coat

The classic trench has stood the test of time for a reason. It’s the item you can turn to when you just don’t know what to wear. Look for details like good stitching and a luxe-looking belt – Hobbs do a great version with the weight and durability of a Burberry, at a fraction of the price.

A designer bag

If you are lucky enough to discover the bag you have been pining over all year at a Black Friday discounted price, then that’s what savings are for! No woman ever regretted a tan or black crossbody.

A faux fur jacket

This furry friend will never let you down, whether you throw it on with a metallic top and pair of jeans, or pair it with a dress.

Black cigarette pants

Think Audrey Hepburn here – they should graze the ankle and fit perfectly.

A silk or satin long sleeved top

Don’t be afraid to go bright here – jewel colours never fail and can give your winter complexion a much-needed boost. Add a statement necklace, pair with jeans, your pencil skirt or cigarette pants, and you are ready for any evening event.

A good blazer

Wool or crepe – black, white, navy or metallic. You will never regret the money you spent on this hard-working item. Ideal for work over a dress, or pair with jeans and heels for casual elegance.

A day to night dress

Black, grey and navy are staples here, but anything you can transform with a change of shoes and a statement necklace will fit the bill. Sleeves will ensure it has year-round appeal. Look for a clean silhouette – you are looking for stylish, not fashionable here.

A great pair of flats

Your hero flats can be anything from a pair of sparkly runners to suede ballerinas. Black or metallics will go with almost anything.

These items purchased on their own will be hardworking additions to your wardrobe, or together you have the perfect stylish capsule. Leave the sparkly skirt in the Black Friday sale, where it belongs…
