Emma Barry Murphy: ‘Moving mindfully is a game-changer’

Emma Barry Murphy may spend her days working as a digital marketing manager in the blockchain industry, but she’s better known for her barre platform, Barre By Emma.
“Though I am lucky to be able to do both, my real passion lies with my desire to spread the love of barre as a form of movement and help others to live a more active lifestyle,” she says. “My teaching style really revolves around form and education as I believe everyone should understand the muscles they’re working and why.”
Balancing two careers means Emma’s days are busy, typically getting up at 6am and teaching a class before she starts her marketing job. “During the day, I’ll also carve out time to walk or play with my dog, and if I’m really lucky, I might be able to take a lunchtime class. After work, I then head to my evening classes, which can be either one or two, depending on the day. After barre, I come home, catch up on some of my barre admin or finish up some work, get ready for bed and it usually ends with a little scrolling and my LED mask. It might sound a bit crazy, but on weekends I only teach two classes and try to spend time with family and friends, enjoy nice food and drinks or take a trip.”
From creating content to editing, and keeping up with admin, Emma loves the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 to handle it all with ease. “Creating and sharing content is one of the best methods of marketing for my barre business. I don’t run social media ads on my barre accounts, but instead focus on sharing content of value for people, and remaining consistent. We hear multiple times a week how the algorithm changes and how it prioritises content, but it really comes down to the content you’re putting out there. Authentic content that people like to watch from an entertainment or educational perspective is super powerful, but also content that gets people talking, thinking or saving.”

“I was so impressed with the Samsung Flip7 when creating content,” she says. “The quality of the camera was exceptional, the different lenses were so helpful and suitable for different environments, and features like the Generative Edit helped me make images look cleaner by removing unwanted items that appeared in the background.”
She loved the selfie mode, allowing you to take high-quality photos, while its filters make content creation seamless. “Using the Samsung for content creation allowed for almost-instant sharing, as I found I could use the filters and other editing tools directly on the phone without having to download another app. I recorded some videos from my phone for my online on-demand platform on the Samsung Flip7, and the quality was so good. One feature that really stuck out for me and made content creation super easy and accessible was the Foldable Design, because it acted as its own tripod, which can be helpful for creating reels, TikToks or workouts.”
When it comes to flipping the narrative, Emma is passionate about spreading the benefits of barre to as many people as possible. “I think that the industry is currently consumed with different forms of exercise and movement options, and mainly at the moment it’s running and Hyrox. Both of these are great, and I believe everyone should move in a way they love and enjoy, but when done consistently, it can be quite high-impact for the body and the nervous system. I think people can definitely benefit from something more low-impact, such as barre and pilates, as a complement to these kinds of high-impact options.”
She notes too that these kinds of exercise can be perceived as easy, and not strenuous enough to have any real benefit. “When done correctly, it’s extremely challenging, and the benefits are endless. Moving mindfully is a game-changer and can help with many different aspects of your life. I think the narrative we need to flip is that you don’t need to take it to the max with every single workout. Forms like barre or pilates are extremely valuable and can also help to build strength.
“I recorded a video with my husband a few months ago where I got him to try one of my upper body barre workouts, and he struggled massively. This video went viral with over 10 million views, but for me, the best thing about it was that over 10 million people were exposed to barre, whether they had positive things to say or not. I think creating content that piques people’s interest is so important.”
As well as using social media to promote her business, Emma also loves how it allows her to connect with clients and others in the wellness industry. She thrives on connecting in person with people in her barre classes. “I love connecting with them on a personal level, and I like to think that it makes my clients feel like they’re part of a community.”
But social media helps her connect with people far and wide, and having a compact, powerful phone at her fingertips with a long battery life means she can stay on top of messages and notifications, and stay in touch with her network even on a busy day. “I’ve virtually connected to so many other instructors in the industry, both in Ireland and across the world. We’re so supportive of each other’s content and sequences, and it really does feel so rewarding to get a compliment from another instructor. It’s also nice to have people to chat to if you’re stuck in a rut or feel a little down or uninspired. Often we share the same worries and coping tactics, and it’s just a nice sense of community with those who are far away.”
Emma’s focus for next year is on growing these connections, planning on hosting more events outside Cork to grow her community. “In addition, I hope to open my own studio so that I will have my own space, where I can host meet-ups and gatherings and take my local community to the next level,” she says. “And lastly, I hope to amplify and strengthen my online offering so that many of us can experience barre from the comfort of our own homes.”
