This Sutton house has been given a crisp, sophisticated update

Its owner wanted the home to have a more masculine feel, whilst still including lots of natural materials and soft textures.

This Sutton home was in excellent condition when its current owner bought it, Joanne Kelly, creative director at Think Contemporary explains, but the interiors were not to his taste. “The home was immaculately maintained,” she explains. “Its structure was sound, its spaces generous. But while pristine, the interior lacked the personal expression and stylistic identity he sought. That’s where we came in.”

The brief was to update the home’s quite traditional aesthetic into something more contemporary and masculine, with natural materials and tactile details. “The brief was clear: the home should feel grounded and elegant, modern yet enduring, with materials that would age gracefully over time.”

Every room, from the kitchen to the bedrooms and bathrooms were updated. Structurally, the design didn’t require moving any walls, with the exception of the master bedroom, which was combined with the bedroom beside it to create a walk-in wardrobe.

When it came to choosing the palette for this home, the aim was to create a calm atmosphere. “Our approach centred on rich, textural contrasts – layering warm woods in varied tones and grains against a palette of soft neutrals and moody charcoal. This interplay created a tactile, grounded interior with a sense of quiet sophistication,” Joanne explains.

“We used a lot of timber elements in the joinery which contrasted with the paler floors. Our client wanted to bring a masculine feel to the space, so we used leather on the sofas and introduced nice stone details also.”

Lighting was also essential to achieving the desired mood. “Sculptural pendants and subtle architectural fixtures were used to shape mood and highlight form. Unexpected furniture pieces – bold in silhouette or material – added a curated, collected feel. The result is a space of refined ease, where modernity meets warmth, and every detail speaks to understated luxury.”

The design of this home has transformed it from a dated space to one that exudes a clean, yet grounded sophistication.
