The best Golden Globes moments you might have missed

The best Golden Globes moments you might have missed

For those of you not in the know, the Golden Globes took place over in LA last night.

A precursor to the Oscars – and generally a good insight into who/what might win big –  it was a big night for Hollywood, and indeed the Irish, with three of our favourite leading men – Barry Keoghan, Andrew Scott and Cillian Murphy – all nominated for Best Actor.

Here are some of the standout moments you might have missed.

Cillian Murphy’s win

The chances of an Irish win for Best Actor were high last night with three of the six nominees hailing from our humble shores, however it was ultimately Cillian Murphy who took home the gold, impressing for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

Arriving up on stage covered in lipstick (courtesy of his adoring wife), the internet has christened him their newest Lover Boy and, well, who are we to disagree?

History was made

There were many other important wins to note on the night including that of Lily Gladstone, (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Ali Wong (Beef) who became the first Indigenous person to win a Golden Globe for best actress in a drama film and the first performer of Asian descent to have won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a limited series respectively.

Wong thanked her ex-husband for his love and support, saying “It’s because of you that I’m able to be a working mother”, while Gladstone delivered part of her speech in the Blackfeet language – an Algonquian language spoken by the Blackfoot or Niitsitapi people. “[This win] doesn’t belong to just me. I’m holding it right now. I’m holding it with all my beautiful sisters in the film at this table over here and my mother, Tantoo Cardinal, standing on all of your shoulders.”

The Roys dominated

Unsurprisingly, Succession was the other big success story this year, winning for its second and third seasons while Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook and Matthew Macfadyen also took home awards for their performances. Logan Roy would be proud… or mildly impressed at least.

The fashion

From Rosamund Pike’s black lace veil to Margot Robbie’s very Barbie-esque gúna, there were plenty of standout-style moments to get us talking.

Billie Eilish played up the prep in an edgy Willy Chavarria look complete with salmon socks and Mary Janes while Natasha Lyonne wowed in a custom Schiaparelli gown and Greta Lee stole the show in Loewe.

Representing the men, Pedro Pascal impressed in all-black as did Jeremy Allen White who donned a sheer button-up under his tuxedo because he knows how to fashion.

Celeb spotting

From Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet to Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, the red carpet was a conveyor belt of well-known faces.

A clip of the latter pair having an animated conversation has since gone viral online with lip-reading sleuths now claiming there’s beef between Gomez and Jenner as she wouldn’t let boyfriend Timmy C pose for a photo with the Disney star. Oh, does it ever end!?

Least funny ‘joke’ of the night

And finally, for the least funny ‘joke’ of the night? A sexist quip made by comedian Jo Koy who in his speech said, “Oppenheimer is based on a 721-page, Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project. And Barbie is based on a plastic doll with big boobies.” Sigh. It’s 2024, can we please stop belittling women and reducing their success to what their bodies look like? Barbie won the award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement lest you forget.

Koy also tried to poke fun of Taylor Swift so all in all, 0 out of 10 for his Golden Globes shtick. Perhaps a female host next time – one who will actually make us laugh?
