Jessie Buckley, Hamnet and all the Golden Globes 2026 winners
Wearing a Dior gown crafted by Jonathan Anderson, Killarney’s very own Jessie Buckley takes home a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama for her role in Hamnet.
“This is not a normal feeling or situation to be in,” Jessie Buckley giggles as she begins her acceptance speech at the 83rd Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night in a room filled with her peers at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles. She goes on to express her gratitude to the cast and crew: “I adore you. I would rave in that glow for the rest of my life with you.”
2026 is off to a very bright start for Jessie Buckley, who won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actress last week and now a coveted Golden Globe for her performance in Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet. I think it’s safe to say that the whole country is crossing its fingers and toes that Buckley gets that same glory at the Oscars.
“It was such an extraordinary set to be part of because we were telling the story of probably the most famous Brit that ever lived, and we had a Chinese director, a lot of Irish and a mostly Polish crew, beside our British family,” Jessie’s acceptance speech continues, before taking the time to name each of the “incredible women [she is] honoured to stand beside in this category.”
“Julia Roberts, you are a hero to us all. Thank you. Jennifer, Renata, Ava, Tessa, God, I’d watch you any time, any where. You blow my mind.”
The film, an adaptation of a book of the same name by Maggie O’Farrell, also took home the title of Best Motion Picture, Drama on the night. Executive producer Steven Spielberg said during their acceptance speech: “I felt there was only one filmmaker on the face of the planet who could tell this story of Anias and Will and the spirits of the earth and the forest, and that was the exceptional, exceptional, exceptional Chloé Zhao.”
As Zhao takes to the microphone, she recalls something Paul Mescal said to her just that morning: “He said that making Hamnet made him realise that the most important thing of being an artist is learning to be vulnerable enough to allow ourselves to be seen for who we are, not who we ought to be, and to give ourselves fully to the world, even the parts of ourselves that we’re ashamed of, that we’re afraid of, that are imperfect, so the people that we speak to, they can also learn to see themselves and fully accept themselves.”
Mescal sadly didn’t win out in his category of Best Supporting Actor, an award which went instead to Stellan Skarsgård for Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value. Now, though, we have a mere ten days of waiting to do before the long-awaited Oscar nominations are announced on Thursday, January 22.
