True love doesn't always last...
It all started when Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn parted ways in April. In May, Billie Eilish and Jesse Rutherford parted ways. Over the next few weeks, several more celebrity couples would break up – including Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello, Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez and Dominic Fike and Hunter Schafer.
This week, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner put the final nail in the coffin when it was reported that Jonas had retained a divorce lawyer after four years of marriage… holiday season was not kind to celebrity couples.
Here are just a few of the casualties that fell victim to summer 2023:
Taylor Swift and Matty Healy
Were they ever really a couple? I’m not so sure but after her breakup with Joe in May, a newly single Taylor was repeatedly linked to The 1975 frontman. “She and Matty are madly in love,” a source told The Sun at the time. Healy was even spotted at Swift’s concert on two consecutive nights. Their supposed romance was short-lived however and in June, TMZ reported that a “friend close to the situation” had confirmed Taylor was “single” again. Cruel summer…
Tyga and Avril Lavigne
Clearly both subscribing to the celebrity date night handbook, Tyga and Avril Lavigne soft launched their relationship to the public in February in Nobu Malibu – the place to be for A-listers. “They’re very into each other,” a source told People, adding that they “don’t plan on rushing into a relationship”… seems their caution was well-advised as the two parted ways not long after. According to TMZ, their breakup was “a mutual decision” and there are “no hard feelings” between them. “The romance just ran its course.”
Dominic Fike and Hunter Schafer
Two of our favourite Euphoria stars, Dominic Fike and Hunter Schafer decided to call it quits after a year and half of dating. Fike confirmed their split in an interview with Apple Music, telling Zane Lowe that he is “done being in relationships right now” due to his struggles with codependency. Also discussing his imminent return to season 3 of Euphoria, Fike didn’t seem worried about it being “weird” on set, saying, “I think it’ll be fine. We’re all adults.”
Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez
Grande and Gomez began dating in January 2020. They announced their engagement 11 months later and in May 2021, they were married at an intimate ceremony at the singer’s home. Surrounded by candles and joined by less than 20 friends and family, it was a low-key affair but the subsequent photos showed two people very much in love.
Long distance ultimately proved to be too much for the couple however who spent much of the past year apart – Grande in the UK filming for the highly-anticipated Wicked adaptation, Dalton back in L.A. for work. While the news didn’t become public until this summer, sources claim that the couple actually separated earlier this year and have been “quietly and lovingly working on their friendship” since then.
Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello
Arguably the world’s hottest couple (or ex-couple, I should say), Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello confirmed their split in a joint statement to Page Six this summer. Asking the public for privacy as they navigate this new phase of their lives, the two said that, while they have made “the difficult decision to divorce”, they still “love and care for one another very much”. Sob.
Bella Hadid and Marc Kalman
Between her struggles with Lyme disease and the end of her two-year relationship with Marc Kalman, it’s been an undeniably tough summer for Bella Hadid.
First meeting through mutual friends, the duo were regularly spotted out and about together while dating, but Hadid was intentionally private about their relationship, telling Vogue, “When you give other people room to have opinions on things that are so personal to you, it poisons it.”
According to Us Weekly, the two split “amicably” and Bella is “using this time to focus on bettering herself”. “They had just grown apart. There are no hard feelings on either side.”
Rosalía and Rauw Alejandro
The former couple announced their engagement in the music video for their song BESO… four months later and it was all over. “I love, respect and admire Raúl very much,” Rosalía wrote in Spanish on her Instagram stories in response to public speculation that they had parted ways. “Not paying attention to the theatrics, we know what we have experienced. This moment is not easy so thanks to everyone for understanding and respecting.”
Bebe Rexha and Keyan Safyari
In July, Bebe Rexha leaked a private message from her then-boyfriend, Keyan Safyari, in which he discussed her 35-pound weight gain… Rexha revealed she was single not long after. Though the singer had previously spoken out about how “supportive” Safyari was to her during their relationship, many have since speculated that the messages were to blame for their breakup.
Sophia Bush and Grant Hughes
After just 13 months of marriage, it’s been announced that Sophia Bush and Grant Hughes are divorcing. According to documents obtained by Us Weekly, the estranged couple’s official date of separation is listed as June 27… which is 16 days after their one-year wedding anniversary. “Sophia and Grant were friends for 10 years and bonded during Covid through their love of community service,” a source close to the duo told People at the time. “They continue to run their nonprofit together and remain good friends.” To quote her One Tree Hill character Brooke Davis, “Love can be for a boy or a girl or a place or a way of life or even for a family. Where you find it is up to you.”
Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied
Rumours began swirling that Millepied had been having an affair with climate activist Camille Étienne in June. Reports suggested that Portman remained committed to her 11-year marriage despite the alleged infidelity and wanted to work on things for the sake of their children. However, an insider told Us Weekly that they are not on good terms. “After news of his affair came out, they’ve been trying to work on their marriage but are currently on the outs.”
Britney Spears and Sam Asghari
In June, Britney’s ex-husband reportedly shared concerns about the mother of his sons overdosing on meth. In July, news broke that she and her current husband Sam Asghari are supposedly heading towards divorce. Girl can’t catch a break.
“As everyone knows, Hesam and I are no longer together… 6 years is a long time to be with someone so, I’m a little shocked but… I’m not here to explain why because it’s honestly nobody’s business,” Spears wrote on Instagram in August.
“I’ve been playing it strong for way too long and my Instagram may seem perfect but it’s far from reality and I think we all know that,” she later added.
While it’s unclear what happened between the two, sources suggest that there are cheating allegations involved and Asghari reportedly confronted Spears “over rumours she stepped out on him”.
Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas
Which brings us to Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas; 2023’s most recent fatality. Yes, technically the news broke in September but the weather has us feeling like it’s summer… so, it counts.
TMZ was the first to report there was trouble in paradise, noting that Joe has occasionally taken to not wearing his wedding ring in recent weeks and two are “headed toward divorce”. “Joe had his people contact and consult with at least 2 L.A.-area divorce lawyers and he is on the cusp of filing divorce docs to end his marriage to Sophie,” sources with direct knowledge of the situation reportedly told the publication.
Sophie officially confirmed the rumours on Instagram this week, sharing a joint statement that reads: “After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and for our children.” Our hearts are broken.
