From a former shop to an elegant bungalow, these homes each have their own unique character.
When we think of period homes, what often comes to mind are the Georgian and Victorian homes common in our main cities, however in more rural areas there are a whole host of homes from different eras to choose from.
These are usually guaranteed to be unique and interesting, and often have the potential to become beautiful homes. Here are three around the country currently on the market for under €200,000.
Fiddown, Piltown, Co Kilkenny, €180,000
Located in centre of the village of Fiddown just 25 minutes’ drive from Waterford city, this four bedroom cottage is undoubtedly charming with its traditional exterior. Part of the building used to be a shop, and it retains the shop front although this section is now part of the house.
Inside, it has two cosy reception rooms, a study, and a kitchen and dining room, plenty of which have original features such as timber sash windows and wall panelling. There is also a wood burning stove and a courtyard to the rear with two outhouses.
Old Luffany, Mooncoin, Co Kilkenny, €125,000
Dating from the late 18th century, this one-bed thatched cottage could make a lovely home for a couple or someone living by themselves. It is small but has everything you need, and although it doesn’t look like it from the outside, there is a first floor.
The rooms have plenty of charm, including wooden internal doors with traditional fixtures, and a stove in the living room. There is also a well-sized garden to the side of the house. Just 20 minutes’ drive from Waterford city, it’s also in a rural location without being too far from amenities.
Ballygammane, Thurles, Co Tipperary, €195,000
A combination of and old stone cottage and a 1920s addition, this three-bed home outside Thurles is in need of a little love but has beautiful proportions and features such as high ceilings and picture rails.
Sitting on 1.7 acres of land, it has a yard, outbuildings and a large grass area. Just over five minutes’ drive from Thurles with its many shops and 45 minutes from Kilkenny, it’s also well located.
