It’s Mean Girls’ Day – here are the film’s best 10 quotes

It’s Mean Girls’ Day – here are the film’s best 10 quotes

As any self-respecting teen-movie lover will know, today is Mean Girls Day.

Referencing a well-loved quote from the 2004 movie, where heart-throb Aaron Samuels asks heroine Cady the date, the day annually spawns a slew of social media quotes, memes and hashtags, and this year, is no exception.

While #October3rd and #MeanGirlsDay trend across the social media world, it got us thinking about what has elevated Mean Girls to the iconic teen movie it is today. There’s the great cast, the honest portrayal of teenage girlhood, the themes of feminism, adolescence, conflict and power. But what has really let the film stand the test of time is its one-liners. Any movie with a cult following has them, and Mean Girls has long been lauded for the quality of its quotes.

Fans love a good catchphrase, and Mean Girls, whether it meant to or not, is absolutely full of quotable moments. It was hard to whittle it down, but here are our ten all-time favourites:

“Don’t have sex. Because you will get pregnant… and die” – Coach Carr

The memories of school sex education come flooding back.

“Four for you, Glen Coco! You go, Glen Coco! – Damien

Inexplicably popular, but it’s one of the most-used quotes in the movie.

“I wish I could bake a cake filled with rainbows and smiles and everyone would eat and be happy” – Random Girl

While this emotional high schooler’s tears were funny, her sentiment of everyone just getting along was actually pretty powerful.

“She doesn’t even go here!” – Damien

But, of course, Damien’s response was better.

“You can’t sit with us!” – Gretchen

Every group of girls you know has posted an Instagram photo with this as the caption at least once.

“I’m not like a regular mom, I’m a cool mom” – Mrs. George

While everyone’s mother probably emulated this line in our teenage years, I doubt any were as embarrassing as Mrs. George’s dancing in the aisles at the school concert.

“That’s so fetch” – Gretchen

While Gretchen’s efforts in the movie to “make fetch happen” failed, her new catchphrase certainly caught on in the real world.

“One time I saw Cady Heron wearing army pants and flip-flops. So I bought army pants and flip-flops” – Highschooler

We all remember quietly keeping tabs on what the It-Girl was wearing in school in an effort to be just as cool. To be honest, we still do this now, but thank god we’ve moved away from army pants and flip-flops.

“You all have got to stop calling each other sluts and whores. It just makes it OK for guys to call you sluts and whores.” – Ms. Norberry

The actual entire message of the film is summed up here by Ms. Norberry in an often-forgotten quote. Women need to stop fighting each other and learn to support and encourage their fellow women.

“On Wednesdays, we wear pink” – Karen

And finally, the reason we’re all here. Happy Mean Girls Day everyone!
