The Irish are dominating this year’s Oscar nominees

Hamnet received a grand total of eight nominations, including Buckley’s for performance by an actress in a leading role and Maggie O’Farrell for best adapted screenplay, alongside director Chloé Zhao.

Jessie Buckley has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Hamnet, her second Oscar nomination, having previously been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the The Lost Daughter in 2021. Hamnet earned eight nominations in total, making it the sixth most nominated film this year, including Best Picture, Best Director for Chloé Zhao and in a new category this year, Best Casting.

If Jessie Buckley wins, an Irish person will have finally won in every acting category at the Oscars – Cillian Murphy and Daniel Day-Lewis have won for Best Actor and Brenda Fricker won Best Supporting Actress but no Irish actor has yet won Best Actress.

Bugonia, co-produced by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Irish production company Element Pictures, has also received four nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress for Emma Stone and Best Original Score. “We’re honoured that Bugonia has been nominated for four Academy Awards, and in these important categories,” said Element Pictures co-CEOs and founders Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe. “We’re proud of everyone involved, and we’re delighted to see the film receiving such wonderful recognition as the awards season continues. We are so proud of Yorgos, Emma, Jesse, Will, Jerskin and all the incredible talent behind Bugonia, and once again so grateful to the amazing Element team in O’Connell Street who have worked so hard to help bring the film to life and out into the world.”

Retirement Plan, by Irish animator John Kelly and narrated by Domhnall Gleeson, has been nominated for Best Animated Short Film, while two-time Oscar winner and Tallaght native Richard Baneham has picked up another nomination for Best Visual Effects for Avatar: Fire and Ash. Irish production company Wild Atlantic Pictures has also been nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor for Ethan Hawke for the film Blue Moon.

“These nominations represent a remarkable recognition of the artistic strength and range of Irish creative talent,” says Désirée Finnegan, Chief Executive of Fís Éireann / Screen Ireland. “It is another powerful moment for the Irish screen industry and underlines the importance of supporting talent and investing in filmmakers and artists. We are immensely proud to see Irish storytelling and talent so strongly represented on the global stage and wish those nominated all the best at the Academy Awards ceremony in March.”

The 98th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 15, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. See the full list of nominees below.
