A Style Maven's Tips For Mixing Junkshop and Vintage With Confidence

Patricia McGinnis? Belfast home, which combines mid-century furniture with junk-shop finds, is brimming with fun, colour and confidence. Here's how to steal her style...

WHO LIVES HERE Patricia McGinnis, owner of beautiful Belfast interiors store Maven, her six-year-old son, Lalit Reddy, and their cute pug puppy, Hugo.
THE HOUSE An early 1960s house in Stranmillis, Belfast, which has been given a total revamp.
WHY WE LOVE IT It's a funky home, bursting with personality, wit and colour.

?It would be true to say that I'm not afraid of colour,? laughs Patricia. And a sense of fearlessness'really is the key to pulling off her deceptively effortless-looking magpie interior, which mixes vintage mid-century modern designs sourced online, stylish High Street staples?and cheap and cheerful junkshop finds.

1. Contrast is king. That's true for both colour and price brackets. The pops of orange?from these bargain Ikea lamps contrast beautifully with the luxe grey Little Greene paint job. Fun cushions from affordable US online store Fab sit comfortably against premium bedding from The White Company. Original artwork seals this unique bedroom scheme.

2. Mix and match?family heirlooms with iconic'statement pieces. Here Patricia has bestowed new life upon?her childhood family dining table (which her parents had bought second-hand) by surrounding it with chartreuse Panton chairs, a 1960s design classic. What she saved on buying a table, she could spend on scene-setting seating.

3. Surround a vintage bed with slick Scandinavian design. Lalit's bed, with its eye-catching headboard came from a local antiques store, while Patricia sourced the bright Danish designs of the lamp (Muuto) and colourful rug and cushions (Hay) from her own store, Maven.

4. Always be upcycling. The repurposed timber coffee table, with its wrought-iron legs on wheels, was sourced from Belfast upcycling mecca?ReFound. It sits perfectly with the classic mid-century Ercol sofa and orange Ligne Roset chair. Geometric designs from online store Fab really tie the room together, with Patricia's inimitable stamp of personality all over it.
