Victoria Beckham strikes gold again for AW19 at LFW

Victoria Beckham strikes gold again for AW19 at LFW

Victoria Beckham simply knows how to design clothes that women want to wear. Her ten years as a designer have been marked by a steady increase in confidence that’s been reflected in the quality of each collection. Right now, she’s on fire.

Following on from a massively successful 10th anniversary collection last September, Beckham’s AW19 show at the Tate Britain’s Central Atrium in London yesterday delivered the kind of pieces that tick every modern working woman’s sartorial checklist: great tailoring, easy-to-wear dresses, chic capes, classic tweeds.

Before the show, Beckham explained, “We looked at things our customer always wants, but found new ways to do them.” This sentiment is at the heart of the Victoria Beckham brand. She doesn’t try and reinvent the wheel; the avant garde is not where her interest lies. Her passion is providing women with wearable clothes that have personality and a point of difference. “Wearable” is no longer a dirty word in fashion. Beckham has made it the holy grail.

The collection also demonstrated Beckham’s inherent understanding of colour – reds punctuated classic camels; cobalt blue modernised heritage tweeds; while shades of yellow, teal and lilac peppered deeper, more traditionally autumnal shades of burgundy and navy.

It’s difficult to pinpoint one area in which Beckham excels more than another – apparently more than 40 per cent of her sales come from dresses – but outerwear has always been one of her strongest points for me. This season, capes featured heavily, capturing beautifully the kind of louche dressing that Beckham has perfected over the last decade.

The mother of four described her AW19 collection as being “…about what women want, about modern femininity and about how to curate those ideas into a collection for today.” This is a collection made for wearing in the real world, with Beckham herself the brand’s best ambassador.
