Irish designer Jonathan Anderson appointed to V&A board

The JW creative director has shared his exciting news of being named as as trustee of the Victoria & Albert museum

Irish designer Jonathan Anderson has been named as trustee of the Victoria & Albert (V&A) museum in London. The designer, from Co Derry, is the creative director of JW Anderson and Spanish brand Loewe.

He was one of four trustees named by British prime minister Theresa May on April 2nd.

Anderson was born in 1984 in Magherafelt, Co Derry. His father is rugby player Willie Anderson and his mother Heather Buckley is an English teacher.

Brown Thomas

When Anderson was working in Brown Thomas in Dublin, his arrangements of menswear caught the eye of Manuela Pavesi, Prada’s fashion co-ordinator, according to Irish Times fashion editor Deirdre McQuillan.

Pavesi became a mentor and Anderson went on to work at Prada while studying at London College of Fashion.

Anderson launched his first menswear collection in 2008. He  expanded into womenswear two years later.  In 2013 he was appointed creative director of Loewe. In 2015 he became the first person to be named both menswear and womenswear designer of the year by the British Style Council.

Anderson took to Instagram to share the news, posting an image of his identity badge: “Very proud and honoured to be appointed on the board of trustees of the V&A museum. Thank you.”

Christian Dior

The V&A is the world’s leading museum of art, design and performance. It was established in 1852 to make works of art accessible to all. Today its purpose is to champion creative industry and inspire the next generation. Its recent Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition was so successful that it received a seven-week extension. The curator of the exhibition is also Irish – Oriole Cullen, from Killiney, Dublin.

An exhibition of Mary Quant’s greatest hits opens at the V&A this weekend. Quant is immortalised in popular culture as the maverick behind the miniskirt and the force behind 60s fashion

Anderson joins the board alongside three other appointees: David Bomford, a former professor of fine art at the University of Oxford and senior restorer of paintings at the National Gallery; Marc St John, a former partner and head of investor relations at CVC Capital Partners; and Genevieve Davies, a governor of the Royal Ballet School and British Youth Opera.

Trustees serve a four-year term and attend six board meetings every year.

Anderson officially started his position in February and will hold the position until 2023.
