40 Years of Fashion: From Flares To Jumpsuits

Every decade has at least one defining look or trend that we’re loath to let go of. Here are three?of our favourites ?

1970s FLARES

High-waisted flares in an indigo wash are your best long-term buy. J Brand (available at Brown Thomas) and Paige Denim (available at Seagreen) fit superbly and don’t fade when washed (although, always turn inside out). Both brands are investment buys, though, with prices starting upwards of €200. Great high street alternatives include?Red Herring at Debenhams, Zara, and Topshop.

1980s JUMPSUIT

The jumpsuit has moved on from its traditional boiler suit origins. With a collar and button-front finish, it’s the new workwear. Wide-leg all-in-ones offer a more flattering option for hourglass and pear-shaped frames – try Wallis, Phase Eight and Marks & Spencer for narrow and wide-leg options. If you’re trying the trend for the first time, ease into the look with a piece that has a dark leg, and a print top, so they appear more like separates.

1990s METALLIC DRESS

Zac Posen fsh F15 002

Pewter finishes, as seen on Sienna Miller (left), work well on blondes, while pearly metallics complement brunettes. Although Elizabeth Hurley’s stole is bang on trend again, these days a faux-fur stole works best with utilitarian dress, such as a military-style midi skirt. Throw a tuxedo jacket over your metallic dress instead for a fresher take on eveningwear. Check out Zara, H&M and Label Lab (at House of Fraser) for metallic dresses at great prices.
