The Story Behind This Fairytale Proposal Photo Is Lovely

Asides from December being all about Christmas festivities, it also means one thing: engagements. The world and his (future) wife tend to get a ring put on it at this time of year and while many ‘We’re Engaged!’ stories are fairly run-of-the-mill, this particular one caught our attention for all the right reasons. It was on a snow-covered, quiet street in Iceland when Michael Kent spontaneously went down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend, Fiona Newlands. Unbeknown to the couple, the romantic scene was discreetly captured by amateur photographer Jessica Bowe, who was out looking at snow showers when she spotted the pair. It was a picturesque, idyllic moment and the result looks like a scene from Love Actually:

So, this was a special night. I was leaving Brav? after a few happy Friday beers and snapping some pics of the lovely falling snow, with Hallgr’mskirkja church in view up Sk?lav?r?ust?gur, on my usual way home when this couple got engaged on the spot. I gave them a moment and then asked if they would like to have this picture as a memento. The man’s hands were trembling as he entered his email address on my phone, and I got some nice hugs of appreciation. According to the Bowe’s?Instagram, the newly-engaged pair were thrilled to find that such a tender, the life-altering moment had been caught so perfectly on camera, however both were left hugely disappointed when they realised they had given an incorrect email address out and thus, never received the snap. Michael, who is from Edinburgh, told Today.com that he just couldn’t let the moment go and began to search for the picture, using his Facebook and Twitter accounts. His crusade quickly went viral. “The thing is, it still would have been an amazing moment without the picture, but the fact we knew the picture existed made it feel almost devastating that we didn’t have it,” he explained.

Thanks to the power of social media slash the internet, all ended well, and the couple were reunited with their photo.

?My intention in the first place was to capture the falling snow in the midst of the twinkling holiday lights,? photographer Jessica explained of the snap. ?Then these two people walked into the street, and I thought it would look lovely to have some silhouettes in the frame. So I managed to catch a shot right before [Michael] went down on bended knee and then, of course, the moment it happened. It took a few seconds to sink in that I’d just witnessed the biggest moment of their lives.? She added that though it might be ‘just a picture’ to some, the fact that the couple’s campaign went viral emphasised how uplifting many found the story. “Amidst everything that’s happening in the world right now, it’s just nice to see a little humanity happening, and I think that’s a big part of why it’s been picked up and spread as widely as it has.”

After tracking down the picture of his fairytale proposal, the jubilant groom-to-be proclaimed: ??I f**king love the internet.?
