It looks like we’re going to be spending a lot of time in our back gardens this summer, so make sure your seating situation is up to the task.
A deckchair is one of those iconic things that can only make you think of summer. They magically appear around this time every year, emerging from sheds and garages across the country. Once the cobwebs are dusted off, they sit proudly in the garden for as long as the good weather lasts. Perfect for reading a book, having a good chat, or simply having a sunshine snooze (adequately SPF-ed), they’re the perfect summer addition to your balcony or garden.
If you’ve taken yours out this year and decided it’s past its best, or maybe you’re yet to join the legions of back-garden sunbathers, we’ve done the hard work for you, and picked out our favourites.

Made from a solid acacia frame, this Ikea design is a modern interpretation of the classic deckchair design. With its stylish rope details, it’s also guaranteed to be infinitely more comfortable than those plastic chairs you drag outside every time the sun peeks out. Brommö lounge chair, €50, Ikea.
If you’re in love with the classic design, Woo .Design have you covered with this no-nonsense option. Available in four colours: grey, beige, red and blue, you can get one of each for a colourful collection, or go for matching for a minimalist monotone vibe. Summer deckchair, €69, Woo .Design.
Proving the simplest designs can be the most beautiful, this Eco chair is made from just natural larch and rope, without any screws or glue. The larch also weathers to a silvery grey naturally, and is extremely durable. It even comes with a linen headrest. Eco chair, €195, The Blue Door.
A deckchair doesn’t suit everyone. Maybe you’re short on space, but still want something less formal than a dining chair, or perhaps you prefer to sit more upright. Either way, this director’s chair from Habitat is a great alternative, still boasting comfy and colourful canvas, and it also folds up neatly for the winter months, too.
