Here’s how to get rid of your post-Electric Picnic fake tan

Here’s how to get rid of your post-Electric Picnic fake tan

It’s time to wash away the weekend and refresh your skin… stat.

Apart from seeing world-class acts, my other favourite thing to see at Electric Picnic is the hoards (and hoards and hoards) of catastrophic, orange-tastic, non-rain-proofed and patchy fake tan.  Although fake tan has become an everyday essential for a lot of Irish women and men, we haven’t yet mastered how to keep a fresh spray in perfect condition for a four-day festival. Post-festival scaries – like Sunday night fear, only worse – are terrifying (hi four-day hangover and a year’s supply of fear), but flaky skin stained with brownish-orange tan (is that muck or tan??) for a week after is even more frightening.

Trying to shift old, unwanted tan can be a lengthy process; especially if you’re eager to replace the old tan with a new coating. Thankfully, image.ie beauty writer Holly O’Neill is well-versed in the world of tanning and has decoded the myth behind smooth, subtle skin post-tan trauma. “Hard, panicked exfoliation leaves skin patchy, red and sore and Googling “Fake Tan Removal” turns your kitchen into a mini chemist”, she says (hashtag relateable). If you want to rid yourself of the remnants of this weekend’s festivities patched across your legs, arms, chest and face, just try these quick skin-fixes instead. (“You’re god damn welcome” – Holly O’Neill.)

“Exposed Tan Eraser is a leave-on gel that eliminates tan build up. It’s the perfect product if you’re a frequent tanner”, says Holly. “The product has Japanese kiwi seeds that cling to the old tan and removes the tan from problematic areas, and it takes – wait for it – 15 minutes. No really, just 15 minutes – and it works on all self-tan solutions. The directions say that for optimum results, apply Exposed Tan Eraser to damp skin, leave it on for 10 minutes and once activated, remove it with normal water. Although the product says to apply to damp skin, we found it worked better on dry skin, and where it says to leave it on for just 10 minutes, we got the best results after 15 minutes. Exposed Tan Eraser is also infused with Shea Butter, so after removing your tan, your skin is left feeling smooth and moisturized”

Amorepacific Treatment Enzyme Peel

This Amorepacific enzyme peel is a superfine powder that – according to the internet – works surprisingly well to polish away the stains on skin. This is a Korean skincare product and although Korean women are known to take ages on their skincare routine (they layer and layer product; allowing each product to set before applying the next. It’s time consuming), this product seems to work surprisingly quick. The general consensus on blogs and forums is that this is an extremely gentle exfoliant and a water will turn the powder into a satisfying and cleansing peel. It softens and evens skin while also helping to clear the way for your serums and moisturizers to better absorb. This tan remover has serious street cred with Vogue beauty experts too.

If you’re after a super-quick and simple solution, Bondi Sands Self Tan Eraser will do the trick. The unique cleansing formula will remove any traces of fake tan, leaving your skin feeling smooth, soft and moisturised. Simply apply the product to dry skin and wait five minutes. After you’ve done this, head straight into the shower and use a flannel or sponge to help wash away the tan. A fantastically fast way to achieve fake-tan freedom. The product sold out in less than three hours when it first released last year, so it has the potential to become a cult product for Irish women.
