Irish Design Spotlight: Adelle Hickey

Irish Design Spotlight: Adelle Hickey

One of many artisans to have showcased their work at Bord Bia Bloom earlier this summer, Adelle Hickey is a designer and printer currently based in Dublin. Her latest collection is inspired by centuries of Irish visual culture – including archaeology, mythology, needlework, Celtic symbols, wildlife and flowers – woven together to create a visual expression of all that is authentically Irish.

Tell us about you and your brand
I am a designer and printmaker. I hand carve and hand print a bespoke collection of cards, prints, notebooks (collaboration with traditional bookbinders) and 100% Irish linen. All of the designs are inspired by Irish visual culture.

What is your mission?
To create and maintain a successful business in a very competitive marketplace.

Did you always know you wanted to be a designer?
I was always very interested in design. So, I guess, yes.

What kind of items do you stock?
I design and make two bespoke collections of hand-printed pieces. Hearts of Ireland is a unique collection of hand-printed cards, prints and notebooks. Home from Home is a bespoke collection of hand-printed 100% Irish linen napkins, bread bags, tea towels and oversized linen bags. The designs are brought together to create a collection of work that celebrates all that is authentically Irish. Sustainability and zero waste are central to my practice, in both design and materials.

What new brands or items are on your radar?
I am currently researching making hand-printed lampshades and wall hangings.

Was money/funding a concern when starting out?
I started very small deliberately. I wanted my ideas, designs and business to grow organically. So money was not a concern.

Best business advice you’ve gotten
Customers identify with people and a story. I use my own name in my branding and the story behind each design is clear on each product.

Favourite fashion/design accounts you follow
Prada, Miu Miu, Marni. and Cathy O’Connor.

Best fashion purchase
A beautiful pair of black suede wedge clog shoes in New York. I could not wear them enough!

Other Irish brands you love
Deeca Design Jewellery, Brookwood Pottery, Marino, Fairview, Badly Made Books, Clarkes of Dublin, Artisan Soap, Kopper Kreation, Anita Reynolds Artist.

Most useful learning since setting up a business
Listen to your instinct and let it shape the way you want to run your business. Do not compare your product to another in the marketplace. Define your own signature.

Proudest moment so far
Taking the first step to be self-employed.

I want my brand to be remembered for… its unique signature and quality.

If I could have anyone use my designs it would be… my friends.
