Help your mom feel like the one-in-a-million that she is with an at-home hair salon session

Remind your mom just how fabulous she is inside and out, with these helpful at-home hairstyling tutorials.

This extended lockdown has been tough on us all. Our sense of self diminishes the longer we loiter about in sweatpants, our eating pattern is erratic at best, exercise is negligible beyond a well-trodden daily walk, and the lack of human contact means we’re all struggling with our mental health. It’s no wonder our self-esteem is at an all-time low.

This only intensifies for those who have been asked to remain indoors for long stints and take extra precautions. People who have retired are struggling to fill their days, unable to pop to the shops or visit friends and family. While work has become all-consuming for many, it at least provides some sense of routine. Without that structure, keeping your chin up indefinitely is exhausting.

So, if you’re lucky enough to have your mum in your bubble, why not remind her just how gorgeous she is with an at-home styling session.

Three experts guide you through three different hair styles below so you get some quality time with your mum while ensuring she comes out looking her best. Because we all know that sometimes looking your best can go a long way to helping you feel your best.

Our guide to doing your mum’s hair at home

Step 1: The set up

The key to creating a salon experience at home is in the set up. You don’t have to go all out, of course, but it should be more than a kitchen chair and a curling iron.

If she lives in a full house, prepare her bedroom (or the spare room) so she can steal away from everyone for a while and relax. Light a candle, queue up Madonna on Spotify and pick out her fluffiest, pink house coat. A few biscuits and a glass of bubbles wouldn’t go amiss either.

Step 2: The do up

By now, you’re probably well aware of what your mum likes done to her hair, but make sure to ask if she wants something different. Is it the usual blowout and root touch-up or has she been wanting a fresh look? If so, have her glance at a few hairstyles and choose her favourite or surprise her with one you think she’ll like.

Here are a few fun styles that are easy to do at home.

Step 3: The show off

Finally, it’s time to debut her fabulous, finished hairstyle. While you can’t traverse the town, you can still make the day special by commemorating it at home. Have your dad plan a special dinner date where she can get dressed up and show off her new look, or plan a fun-filled photoshoot, where you recreate cringey family pics or take glamorous selfies.

Either way, it’s a great way to spend some quality time with your mum and show your appreciation for everything she’s done (and still does!) for you.
