Why A Shirtdress Is The One Piece You Can’t Live Without This Year

Why A Shirtdress Is The One Piece You Can’t Live Without This Year

If you’re looking for versatility in your wardrobe, and really, who isn’t, then a shirtdress is the one piece that could save you from any number of sartorial quandaries over the coming months. It’s one of those understated, utilitarian items that often gets forgotten among the plethora of brand new bright and shiny trends that emerge twice a year. But not only is it a workhorse of an item, it’s so effortlessly chic too. Plus it works for almost every body shape.

If you’re petite, wear your shirtdress buttoned up to the neck, and if you’re fuller figured, leave the first few buttons open to create a flattering V-shaped neckline. If your style is a little boyish, leave your shirtdress unbelted and wear over jeans or leather trousers, while women who want to emphasise their hourglass curves should always belt up. In summer, wear it open over a T-shirt and jeans… really, the options are endless. Even better, the high street has some terrific options at great price points.

This shirtdress from Cos doesn’t have a belt so is more suited to women who prefer a fluid silhouette. The green check feels really modern, and although it’s a winter sale buy, it will look utterly fresh worn through spring/summer.

Dress with gathered detail, €30 (reduced from €99) at Cos

Another check option, but with a completely different vibe. Unlike the above version, which has a formality to it, this piece from Zara is begging to be unbuttoned and worn in a more laid-back fashion.

Check dress, €49.95 at Zara

This is such an elegant piece. The longer-length hemline, pockets and navy colour all combine to make this shirtdress feel like a luxe item.

Long dress, €59.99 at H&M
