The future looks bright at NYFW as designers send an explosion of colour down the catwalks

The future looks bright at NYFW as designers send an explosion of colour down the catwalks

I love to colour-block as anyone who’s read my recent post will know, so the latest collections at New York fashion week have been a delight to behold. Prabal Gurung, Sies Marjan and Anna Sui are offering a kaleidoscope of colour for AW19, which is making me excited about winter before we’ve even dipped our toes into spring. But that’s just me; I’m a little like a hibernating animal as I love the months of September through to December more than any others (even when we have a heatwave in July/August).

Hair styles aside, there is much to love about Anna Sui’s collection. Creative colour-blocking (purple with green; orange and pink) made simple tweed suits look fresh and modern and very un-Chanel-like.

A retro-inspired jumper dress with pockets, and a gorgeous check and shearling coat that could have leaped straight out of an episode of The Get Down spoke loudest to me, while a Kate Moss-esque leopard-print faux fur coat will be in high demand come August I suspect.

At Prabal Gurung, an exquisite confection of pink, teal, yellow and red elevated the idea of colour-blocking well beyond the simplicity of the pink and cobalt blue outfit I’m wearing today; it was an absolute dream. A padded pink coat with red lapels, cuffs and patch pockets tied with an aubergine belt was similarly wonderful.

Sies Marjan combined bold brights with directional silhouettes and proportion play; sleeves were longer length, as were sweaters, but layered over hip-length jackets. Fuchsia pink trims edged tangerine-coloured jackets, and chartreuse and lilac made for another unexpected but utterly modern colour combination.

Let’s home London has just as much to say on this sartorial subject.
