Until recently, I hadn’t worn a denim shirt since I was a teenager.?I’ve always felt there are far more interesting pieces to spend money on, and that a denim shirt is a little like a fashion opt out – generic, like skinny jeans. But a couple of months ago I picked up a dark denim shirt in River Island. I’ve been wearing more shirts recently (in part because I finally bought an ironing board so I can wear them wrinkle-free!) and I suppose a denim version was bound to pop?onto my radar eventually.?Now it’s freeing up other items in my wardrobe that were languishing in wait?for the perfect sartorial partner. It creates just the right contrast with smart culottes, and is the perfect pairing with silk jog pants. In fact, it’s proving to be a hit no matter what I put it with. So if they’ve sparked your interest too, here are some of the best in the stores right now.
This Current/Elliott ‘shirt is actually called “The Perfect” denim shirt. I love the?worn-in appearance of?it as well as the epaulettes on the shoulders.

I like this very fresh take on a classic by Massimo Dutti. The denim fabric looks beautifully soft, and the utilitarian nature of the material contrasts nicely with the feminine puff sleeves.

The tie-front style of this shirt gives the appearance of layered denim, even though it’s only a single piece. The tie detail adds a girlish flourish to an otherwise boyish style.

Frills have been one of the key style details of this season, and while a frill dress is very pretty, a frill-sleeve shirt is a little more unexpected and interesting.
